I'm so disappointed. Dispel magic is one of those things, it's not whether you can make it work, it's how you make it work. This ranks up there with gutting polymorph as one of the all-time cowardly design decisions.

Gutting polymorph was one of the smartest design decisions wotc made.

Executive summary:

Bulls: "This removes a game-stopping roadblock! Also it is shorter and removes corner cases."

Bears: "It doesn't do the same thing any more! It's basically a different spell."

(side discussion: argument about the number of lines that Dispel Magic took up in the 3.5 PHB)

This is why we need a Search function.

And as stated above, Counterspell is most likely coming, and wouldn't be hard to houserule in any case (daily; immediate interrupt;spell go poof).

Cowardly? You're using the wrong word. Cowardly means in a disgracefully fearful or timid manner. Gutting and changing mechanics so drastically is not cowardly at all, as they are sure to get flack from the crowd that says "Don't slaughter our sacred cows, no matter what decision you make if it's different than my opinion you're wrong."

I'd have to say the whole 4e design is actually quite bold, daring and new, quite the opposite of cowardly.
