Anyone excited about A Game Of Thrones RPG?

Interesting that you see it that way. In my reading of it only like 3-4 characters are even moderately sympathetically or humanely written. True, most of the rest are interesting, but as a character study on how to not live one's life.

There are only a few true monsters, and the ones we spend time near are almost classical tragic Greek heros -- perfect, but for pride / honor / whatever.

I don't think anyone in FANTASY FICTION is a model on how to live one's life. Dragons and Rings of Power just don't crop up in my life so often these days. :)

True. But other temptations and problems do tend to crop up. Then again I just tend to look at most everything as allegory to at least some extent. I'm not into art for the sake of art so I always look for a deeper meaning behind stuff.

Yes, and as I re-read the books, I find I have less sympathy with Eddard and his unwillingness to compromise. Others may be disloyal to the crown, but most people are loyal to something -- family, house, or the realm as a whole. Littlefinger, for example,
advises Eddard to back Joffrey before betraying Eddard -- would Eddard be alive if he'd been a bit more flexible in interpreting what the most honorable course of action would be?

Sure, there are monsters:
Joffrey, The Mountain That Rides, Cersei.
Much seems to revolve around non-monsters coping with their actions, trying to remain faithful to family, house & leige. Especially
Jamie Lannister, whose love is almost as destructive as Eddard's honor.

Amazon is lying to you! Check that e-mail carefully and I think you will find that it refers to a rerelease of the TPBs.

Feast for Crows is going to be out in hardback in November.

I would certainly argue that the series would support a deep reading for meaning, but I would concede that it probably lies at deeper and more profound level than allegory through the characters.

On the other hand, I also have a pretty high tolerance for the characters. I think they achieve a lot of nobility in situations that require a great deal of very basic strength and action. When survival is at the premium that it is in the game of thrones your moral parameters are going to be distinctly different.

In particular I like that the basic flaws of the characters often serve to drive their primal noble qualities. I don't know who can be held up as a hero in fantasy in general, but within the Song of Fire and Ice I think a good place to start looking for it in terms of allegory is with the seven.

Many of the qualities that make Cersei so difficult, for instance, are qualities that certainly do speak to her attributes and fervent desire to be a strong and protective mother. On the flipside of that equation most of the flaws of Caetlyn, an otherwise admirable person, are the manifestations of that exact same desire.

In a world where magic and religion appear to be gaining in strength and relevance, I find it fascinating that the Seven are having at once the least prominent and, to my eyes at least, the most profound affect.

Thanks Doc! Upon further review you are correct! The Feast For Crows will be out late Oct/ early Nov.. The RPG will be out in Sept.. So I have alot to look forward to!! Does anyone out there plan to run a campaign set in this setting? Thanks Maester Luwin

I was wondering if anyone had checked out GOO's website & what they think of the game mechanics/ how they handled the D20 system to fit Martin's world? Thanks Maester Luwin

It seems to be pretty good so far. Low HP increases, high Defence progression (close to BAB) and Armour as Damage Reduction. The book is 496 pages large with 100 pages devoted to rules and 400 to setting. It will also be OGL so no need for PHB etc.

Actually Skywalker the page count is now up to 576! There is also a new preview up as well! I'm looking forwrad to this game. This & Thieve's World all in one summer! Thanks Maester Luwin

Not really Captain. But glad you stopped by anyway. Thanks (in this particular post I'm thanking you Captain for your comment/ trying to be polite)Maester Luwin
