Anyone going Epic?

The Souljourner

First Post
I'm really psyched about the Epic rules, but haven't gotten a chance to actually use them yet. Has anyone here used them for a significant period of time? I'd be really interested in your thoughts on how well they balanced the classes and abilities.

I have a large game that will soon become epic. I'm about to run them through City of the Spider Queen, but there's a problem. The players all have characters of 16th to 18th level, but they will undoubtedly be 19th or 20th by the time they actually finish what they are doing and get into the new module. The suck part is that I have to go through that entire damn book and increase the difficulty of the encounters. Ya' see...City of the Spider Queen is meant for a 10th level party. Argh.

The party in my Return to the Tomb of Horrors campaign (link in the sig!) is abou to be epic. Two characters are 19th, and the rest are gaining fast (except the ones that keep dying :) ).

We are also slowly getting into epic levels. My high-level character Silvermoon is up in the Rogue's Gallery, but not yet epic.

It will be really hard to choose the feats, I believe. There are SO MANY cool feats for spellcasters! Aaaargh! How will I be able to choose at least a couple Improved Spell Capacity!?

The epic rules look like the progress you make beyond 20th level is very, very slow. Much, much slower than the progress in the last levels up to 20th.

About balance? No idea yet, sorry!

I'm probably going to use an epic creature against our 18th/19th level party soon... but it'll have a few limitations (not in its abilities, but rather in the way it can, or better wants to use them) to make it fair! :)

I consider buying that one. Do you recommend it?

Also, I heard rumors that there will be other modules about Lolth's absence. Does anyone know anything about that (as Kiaransalee gained enough power through influx of followers to increase her DR and even advance to lesser goddess, I do hope that Vhaeraun finally will become an intermediate deity - after all, this is his single best opportunity since he's in strife with Lolth)

Epic City of the Spider Queen

Actually, you don't have to raise the difficulty of the encounters if you don't want to.

You could just run the encounters as is. But change the adventure pace so that they can't rest and recover spells, etc. (unless they want to cast Wish to restore the party to full health). They'll walk through most of the encounters, but the last set of encounters should prevent a series of obstacles for the party.

The group I'm in is seventh level, almost eighth. Since this is a high as they rest of the people in the group have ever gotten (I'm the new guy in the group), this is about as close to epic as I'm going to get. But the games are still going good, especially after last session. We have purpose again. So, maybe we'll get there. ;)

Oh, I highly recommend it! It's a very well written module with a break-neck pace, though at times, it can slow down to put emphasis on the story. Lot's of NPCs (most you kill quickly though ;)), interesting monsters, nasty traps, etc.

One of the cooler things about the module is that you can easily run a party of evil drow through it. The adventure pretty much stays the same but the perspective and overall goal of the party is different. I thought that was awfully damn cool in and of itself. It's not very often that you find a module written that well.

James Wyatt has most certainly outdone himself this time. :D

DISCLAIMER: The usual disclaimers apply...

3) If you are sick and tired of dark elves being called drow, keep in mind this is for the Forgotten Realms, so please, don't piss and moan. Just find another thread to post in.
4) If you think everything Forgotten Realms is broken, please, don't piss and moan. Just find another thread to post in.
5) If you only rag on this book because you're just pissed that you're poor and can't afford this book until you get your next allowance installment from mommy or daddy, please, don't piss and moan. Just find another thread to post in.
6) If you just love to rag on any book that you don't have yet, but the very instant you finally get your grubby little hands on it you then begin vomiting up more praise than a Witness at an airport, please, don't piss and moan. Just find another thread to post in.

Other than that...all comments welcome.

Won't work at all, and for one reason...

This is why.

Not really. Not when they're that high level. Besides, for those that are 18th level, they wouldn't earn any XP for the first half of the module. Also, I don't want to ruin the pacing of the module. If I want to maintain the current feel of it, my only choice is to beef it up. Not saying I like it, though. :)
