Anyone going to Dragon*Con? (Atlanta)

vox

First Post
I'm thinking about going to Dragon*Con in Atlanta (8/28-9/02) this year with my non-gaming but sci-fi geek partner. Is anyone else planning on going? Are there any "must see" events at the con or just really cool stuff to see in Atlanta in general? I've been before but don't know the town well.

Thanks,

I go to college in Atlanta, so our college gamers' club will be going as a group. As far as things to see . . . um, not really. It's a big city, and like all big cities there are a lot of places you can go to have fun. It really depends on what you like. I've heard the Coke Museum is interesting, but I've never been there.

As I'm also a college student in Atlanta, I might be going, but not for any gaming, though. Supposedly, gaming has very little priority at Dragon*Con. I don't know what exactly I go for, but it'd probably be watching anime again... oh well

Good ol'...Byakhees?

The gaming info on the DC website is very tentative but one possible Call of Cthulhu game is set in Hazzard County and the players are the Duke Boys, Daisy, Cleetus, etc.

Now that I would like to see. Is the General Lee faster than a Nightgaunt? What appendix is that in? I would imagine that inbreeding is going to show up in the plot somewhere.

Well, I get in free, so I guess I have to go.

Living Greyhawk is the biggest RPG at DragonCon, although there are still other just plain RPGA games too. In those, you are given a character.

There is also board gaming, miniatures, and LARPing.

Things to do in the city itself are not that important, because there is way too much going on to leave the con. 20,000 people are a lot in one place, and people watching can by itself be a full-time activity.

I try to go to the High museum of art every few years. You will want to go to the Varsity and get a chilli dog, but be ready to order or no soup for you!

There are lots of, umm, dance clubs nearby to see, umm, dancers...

Downtown has a lot of one-way streets, so it can be difficult to get around to the hotels. You might want a map.

Eating is okay, there is a Wendy's and the very expensive hotel restaurant. Nearby is a good sushi bar if you like eating bait. But not too many restaurants. There is a mall/eating away in the elevated walkway, but it closes too early and is not open on the weekend.

That's about it. Try to catch one of the bands there, they have some pretty unusual things there from time to time, my favorite was a tribal drums band with near-naked dancers...

Watch out for the Crüxshadows - great music & the greatest live show I ever saw!

We're trying to come over to Dragon Con from Germany but it's a little tricky - we'll see if we can make it.
