European lab coats look basically the same as American ones. At least in my experience .

i've seen some with a little different flair to them from Germany and France.

the German one was double-breasted, but the collar was still not all the way up like the one in question. the visiting scientist was from a commercial company.

the French one was much like a Nehru jacket. the visiting scientist was from the Pasteur Institut

That sounds like one from a medical institute. One of our technical assistants working with cell cultures had a lab coat model like that.

I've worked for 5 years in two different clincical labs.

One of the companies was so cheap they didn't eve n give us real lab coats. They gave us disposable coats, and expected us to wear them several days in a row.

It appears to me Prof. Membrane is wearing a trenchcoat he has bleached white. I assume the other scientists laugh at him behind his back for this, but I know little of anime, so maybe white trenchcoats go with the big hair and such.

Why is it, after looking at that image, I picture him in his lab coat at a bar saying something cheesy like "Hello there. I'm a scientist. Can I buy you a drink?"

Yeah... it look like Doogie Howser meets 90210....
