D&D 5E Anyone interested in my conversion of I3 for 5e?

Now that I have all 3 core books and actual time to start playing 5e, I will be using the classic 1e module by Tracy and Laura Hickman, Pharaoh (I3), to give the rules a thorough test-run before starting on my homebrew campaign.

I will be converting it up to 5e to run it.

I am not entire sure if this is allowed under EN World rules, so I apologise if this is not allowed and admins can feel free to nuke this thread.

If it IS allowed and anyone is interested, I shall be doing a conversion using the 3 core books; so any monsters not in the 5e MM (there are a few really odd ones in Pharaoh) will be using their closest MM equivalent.

I think that as long as your conversion notes are such that you ONLY convert the monsters/traps, etc... rather than recreate all the descriptions/fluff and maps, it is perfectly proper to do this, and would be a lot of fun.

Yes, this will be stat blocks only. I will be making a few personsonal adjustments to make it fit my run-style (example: I personally feel that too much is left to random chance and it is perfectly possible to have this module play out as the characters wandering in the desert until they die; not exactly inspring!)

That being said -- I worked on the first monster last night, the sandman from the 1e Fiend Folio. I am a big FF fan and have run a lot of critters from it, but not this guy. And in true old school fashion, he is NASTY.

Will be posting it tonight, I hope.

NOTE: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

Converting monsters is proving to be a GREAT way to get under the hood of 5e! As a hardcore B/X guy, I love the new approach to monster creation -- encounter-driven instead of mechanics, 'balance' being secondary to interesting creations.

A few things stand out to me thus far:

5e monsters have a LOT of hit points; there does not seem to be a corrolation between CR and HP. I love this! It will be a bit of a juggle to have a monster with enough hp to be hearty but not turn combat into a grind. Combined with bounded accuracy, I think this will prevent one of my biggest problems with Pathfinder, which is to automatically double a creature's hp so that it will last more than 1-2 rounds.

Lower AC. Lower AC with higher HP will, I hope, keep players more actively involved as 3.x's miss-fest is countered with higher HP.

Higher XP. This is the only change I am a little leery about, as I think the progression between levels is rather fast in 5e. Will have to play around with this element to see how I like the current XP to CR ratio.

Those are my initial thoughts, anyway.

Hit points are a very important part of calculating CR. AC and HP factors in to the calculation of basic defensive CR. You can play around quite a bit with the toggles to create easily hittable monsters with loads of HP or hard to hit creatures with fewer HP for roughly the same CR value depending on the spread.

Check out the creating a monster section of the DMG to find out more about how hit points affect CR.

Yep, I did that. I was just speaking in generalizations and I think that the conversions require a bit of 'toggling' as you said; in fact, that is a brilliant visual!
