D&D 5E (2014) The books I used for 5E game prep this week (in pictures) [+]

Personally, I find even the stinkiest stinker to be more inspiring to make something interesting from that most other monster books I’ve encountered (from WotC/TSR at least).

But anyway this thread is not about arguing the merits of these books (as I suggested in the OP) but just about sharing what we do use. (Or at least what I use, even if no one else participated 😜)
I didn't mean it as a challenge to your opinion. I just thought your opinion was interesting considering my own opinions on it. It makes me want to open up the FF and thumb through it.

It’s a horror themed campaign…

Would be interested to know how you use the AD&D Monster books and DMG in 5e - I try to steal from 1e DMG random tables and often borrow 1e Monsters/Treasure (the latter especially tending to be a little more flavorful than 5e counterparts) but it's not something I have the facility to convert on the fly.

Sorry for the delay in response.

As I suggested above, when linking to this thread, since I mostly convert older edition adventures to 5E I am frequently looking up the monsters included there in the 5E MM, being kinda disappointed in the adaptation and then doing my own by looking back at previous iterations (the linked thread includes more details in this process).

As for the 1E DMG, you are 100% correct in how I use them. Mostly for the gems and jewels tables (which I like rolling on/picking from) and this time I used the wilderness encounter tables for different terrain type as the basis for my own for the areas the PCs would be traveling through.

I also use it for magical items, frequently grandfathering aspects from older versions for 5E games. For example, most wands and staves in my games have set number of limited charges, not the "recharges at dawn" common to 5E.
