D&D 4E Anyone knows how ranged weapons work in 4e?

Looking at the character sheets, it seems that the ranged weapons have entries like: "20 squares normal / 40 squares max". I guess this means that you shoot up to 20 squares with no penalty and up to 40 with a penalty (-2, -5 or something). Can anyone that has played in the game confirm this?

Something else, the ranger weapon is marked as "load free". What does that mean?
