Lived in Charlotte for 10 years (1990-2000) back down there on business a couple of times a year - been to SE Brewery many times - looking forward to sampling the new dish!
Better than even chance I will be relocating back down there within the next 12 months (just so I can be close to Nakia). The spousal unit and I are going down June 2-5 for a preliminary house-hunting trip in our old haunts of N. Charlotte (Highland Creek, Huntersville, etc).
If you are within an hour of Charlotte and like things Irish...you must visit Ri-Ra's Irish Pub in midtown Charlotte. Best Guinness I have had this side of the Old Country.
Come to Charlotte...the new gaming mecca of the SE!

Good luck with the househunting and possible move, Old One. I hope it works out, both because I know you want to get out of Maryland and because I want to play in a Faded Glory campaign.
And thanks for the Pub advice. I'm not a beer drinker, but my wife loves Guinness (she was born on St. Patrick's Day, after all), so we'll check it out.

Thanks for the well-wishes. The catalyst for me was realizing I will spend 23 days in the car commuting this year...life is too friggin' short for that
! Plus, the housing market in the Baltimore/DC area is just sick...I could barely afford to buy the place we are in now if we had to purchase it today.We can get a BAHOAGC (Big-A** Home on a Golf Course) in N. Charlotte with the lovely yuppie suburbanite amenities my wife and I crave for ~ $275k to $325k. The same home in Balt-DC runs $550k to $850k. I have actually figured out that I can keep working at my day job - commuting by air weekly from Charlotte to Alexandria, VA - and still save $1,000 per month in housing and commuting costs...crazy.
We will see how things progress...but I am cautiously optimistic.

This is the exact reason why we are looking at that area. The Richmond housing market is artificially inflated by some unseen force. I can understand a crowded area like D.C. that's growing, but there is plenty of room to expand in Richmond, so why there aren't a ton of builders meeting the demand is beyond me. They actually had people camp out to get new lots in a subdivision a while back. That was insane.

BTW, Old One, you still do financial planning, right? Once I move, things get settled, and I start to get my first ever non-grad student salary, I'd like to talk.
And der_kluge, Richmond is a real estate anomaly. Not only could the city itself expand, there is plenty of places for "infill" -- revitalizing existing neighborhoods within the city.
Sarah and I got a brand new 3/2 ranch in Rock Hill for less than $150K. It's not giant, but it's nice.

Really, I've concluded that the large influx of northerners who are used to paying exorbitant fees for a home have artificially raised the price of homes here. But once you go up, unfortunately you can never really reverse the trend. Maybe I should go into the construction business. Seems like there's a lot this town needs. Every day my wife and I are like "we should open up a -blank-, this town could really use one." So far the list includes:
Sonic
Boston Market
Fazoli's
Valvoline Oil change place
A decent barbecue restaurant
A Mexican restaurant worth a damned

OO - I hate to do this to you (I feel all wishy-washy), but I think I'll have you just hold on to that resume for now.
Long story short, the guy who used to be my manager (who got promoted to director) (and whom I've really seemed to have made an impression upon) asked me to join his new team which was recently formed as a result of a reorganization. My wife and I talked, and this sounds like a good opportunity for me, so I'm going to hold off on any aggressive relocation plans at the moment and see how this plays out.
