Just curious because there is a fair chance I'll be going to school in a town about 10 minutes away. Anything fun to do? Must see items? Thanks.

i actually live on the cape, but i play D&D in Taunton which is close to Providence. I hear the Providance place mall is fun, and there's this BBQ place called Wes's. They have the BEST BBQ food i've ever had. It somewhere around the downtown area, i'm sure if you ask around you'll find it.

You're from Cheshire huh? I was born in New Haven, and lived in Clinton untill i was five. I still remember making trips to Cheshire too.

Yep...classic small town. Nice but boring. Though in recent years I think the populations gotten to big. To much money here also.

Anyone else?

Hamden, CT is Living Imagination's headquarters, and all of us live in or around Hamden (West Haven to Danbury is the spread for us 7).

Much closer to you now, though... not Providence.

I'm from there originally, and still have friends in the area. Most of the culture you might want can be found in Boston, which is only an hour away (too far for many locals). Here are some tips:

1) Become a paranoid driver if you aren't one already. RI has one of the worst driving records and highest insurance premiums in the country. Within providence the bus system is pretty good though.

2) Don't get involved in politics. Providence has one of the most corrupt governments in the country.

Fun things to do:

Waterfire, a monthly(?) event on the Providence river downtown, with live music, gondolas, art shows, snack booths, etc. Happens late at night, and a lot of people come.

If you like eccentric, arty films and performances, then RISD and Brown U. put on a *lot* of shows. Providence has very good theater in general, Trinity Rep and Leeds are the most professional but there is a ton of amateur/student stuff of high quality. For really fringe stuff, go to AS220 downtown if it's still there.

Wes' is indeed the best BBQ I've ever had, another vote for it from me. The best SE asian food I've ever had is at Apsara's, also in Providence (or near the border). Cheap, good, and huge variety of dishes.

Downtown is still kind of lifeless a lot of the time, but a good size to walk around in. The new mall is very nice, and there's a skating rink on Kennedy Plaza open in the winter. The Gamekeeper is also downtown, a good RPG/board game store in the Arcade.

That's the kind of stuff I like to do there. It doesn't have everything, but Boston is always close too for big concerts and events. If you want more info, send me e-mail and I can help you out.

I've been living in RI for a couple of years, and it's pretty nice. I'm not much of a go-out-and-do-something person, so I don't have much to recommend.

The Providence Place mall IS big, IS fun, but is horrible on weekend congestion and the parking garage fees are murder. What's great is that there's a Dave & Buster's right across from the theater... go have some drinks, then stumble across the walkway to a very decent theater experience.

In winter there's some kind of ice sculpture/snowman affair out in Providence on the common. Great for a walk-through with a sweetie.

BE SURE to see the Roger Williams Park Zoo's Jack O'Lantern Spectacular when the fall comes around. They sell hot cider that you sip as you walk through a 3 acre darkened path lit only with pumpkins. Outstanding. http://www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org/jackolantern/code/FactSheet.html

There is a drive-in theater up on 146, showing double and triple features. I've never been, but want to go.

For a game store, the Game Keeper is nice, but try Your Move Games in Providence. Big store, lots of games, lots of space to play them.

Uh... if you're into mini golf, like I am, they just opened a place called Mulligan's Island in Cranston- it's huge. Pretty good place.

I know tons of gamers in the area. Let me know if you need the hook-up.
