Anyone play a Royal Explorer from Song & Silence?

Explorer
Basically, what the question asks. I am intending on playing a rogue2/wiz3 moving into royal explorer (I might take a level of ranger first).

Has anyone tried this class? Anyone enjoyed it? Hated it?

Thanks

I loved the heck out that class.

The character started out as a Gnome Rogue/Barbarian cartographer. I tried to limit myself to only taking feats and such that were almost completely useless, and therefore ended up falling almost seamlessly into the Royal Explorer PrC.

However, the character ended up being one of the single most fun characters I've ever played. As I'm sure you've noticed, the power level of the class isn't especially high, but they can have a lot of good flavor with a little bit of work.

I really wouldn't reccomend taking levels in Wiz for the PrC, though.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

It does look like an awfully fun class to play.

I am using wiz to try to offset my character's weaknesses. He's a really smart guy, who loves the idea of exploring and learning new things that noone else knows. He also wants to share this with the world. He's not the brawniest guy, but his transmutation spells (Bull's Strength, Spider Climb, e.g.) are his forte.

How did you manage to get around the lack of Open Lock as a class skill though? That doesn't seem to make any sense to me.

I've got a player in Company of the Random Encounter who is heading for Royal Explorer. He's still a few levels off, at the moment, though. He's playing a Halfling Bard ... I think he needs 7 levels to get the pre-reqs for the class. That's mainly due to the Wilderness Lore requirement, as it isn't a class skill for him.

It'd probably be a lot faster and easier if he took a level of Ranger along the way, but he's keen to pursue the angle he's been using so far, and as long as the character is fun (which it has been) that's all that matters :)
