Anyone read this? (Eragon)

I'm part of a group, who organizes a big readers' jury for people from 12-16 (*) ... last year Eragon was the winning title. I never read it myself as it seemed to be, well, written for children. And that's about all I can say about that, except that our orga group might get to meet Paolini at the Frankfurt Book Fair - if that's confirmed I might have to read it :p

(*) The 'Moerser Jugendbuchjury', 'Moers youth jury' in English. The idea is to get young people reading instead of watching TV (or whatever) by giving them an incentive to read - those with the most books read win prizes. Also it's interesting to see, what kind of books are best received by that age category - and this might help to bring more such books onto the market. :)

That's very cool! I might have to look into this idea. If there isn't one in my community now, maybe I'll look into founding one.

BTW, wouldn't "Moerser Jugenbuchjury" be "Moer's Youth Book Jury?" What little German I've acquired over the years is pretty rusty, but the word "buch" is right there.

On another note, I heard recently that the author of Eragon was only 15 years old at the time of writing. Now 18, the second book in the series is due soon. A full-length novel at 15 is impressive. I'm 31 and have yet to publish my first book.

I listened to it on CD. It was entertaining enough, though I have to say that virtually everything in it is a fantasy cliche.

My wife and I were on a long road trip while listening to it, and I kept making oddly appropriate Star Wars quotes every chapter or so. Amazing how many of those quotes applied.

... yes.

You'll notice that in unedited posts I often leave out 'less important' words. I'm not quite up to thinking speed in my typing yet, which confuses me sometimes ;).

Read it out of fascination over the age of the author and they way he and his family self-published and managed to create enough buzz to get picked up by a larger publisher.

As others have mentioned, the book was a decent read, but had plenty of cliches. There were also times when I could tell the writing was a little immature.

Don't get me wrong, I paid money for the book and considered it well worth the price. If the author continues then he could end up writing something great. This was to be the first in a trilogy (again, almost a requirement in fantasy these days), but we have gone a while without seeing book 2. Maybe the author is starting to read George Martin.

bought this on the recommendation of JoeBlank.

didn't read it all the way. i got bored with the cliches. but for a first time book it was a good effort.

i guess i was just too old or cynical.
