Anyone Remember...

The so called power creep has actually been very well contained. And the number of books Wizards puts out is oddly enough so they can stay in business.

I agree with you about power creep. It's been well-contained, better than in past editions (been playing since 79, by the way).

I guess I'll sound like a broken record, since this topic has come up a number of times at least equal to the number of books the original poster claims is out there, but choice is good. If you don't like all the options - don't use them. Simple enough solution.

When all you could play were fighters, magic users, thieves and clerics? ( and paladins, rangers, druids, monks and assassins...and real bards. That could kick tail).

I remember those days and they were good. I can't stand the PrC and all the add-on classes and such. My current group feels the same way and we play 3e core rules only.
That said....

I feel anything that generates interest in our hobby and brings in new players is a good thing.

Man there's a lot of us old guys on this board.

And to answer the OP: options are never limiting. Saying more supplements ruins the game is like saying you don't like coffee any more because Dunkin Donuts now sells latte.

Mmmm... Latte.

Do you remember the days...

When all you could play were fighting men, magic users, and clerics?

Is it me or are there 38973943789 books out there to juice up characters? Whatever happened to having a good character be good not because of a "build" but because of background and history of play?

I guess I'm getting crotchety in my old age, but I think this class arms race is going to kill the game. What was Gygax thinking when he released "Supplement I: Greyhawk", I don't know. We didn't need the thief or paladin - things were great as they were. And all weapons deal d6 damage!

Sorry had to whine myself.

1980 something- started with AD&D, moved to the BlueBox, then back to AD&D then on to Gamma World.

I was twelve- still game with one of those Players though we seperated for a while.

Man, do I feel old.

They can put out as many snazzy new PrCs as they want- I still won’t allow anything outside of the core books, so it doesn’t affect me at all.

I don’t see how having a variety of character options out there would kill the game anymore than having a variety of automobile models to choose from would kill driving; It all comes down to whatever the GM is allowing on the road.

Clever, very clever :D

I started playin in 99... *runs away*

I started playing in '59 and walked uphill both ways to the game. So there. Yeah, it was great back then, none of this "paper" and new-fangled modern stuff.

The great connector for all the editions, of course, is the existence of trolls. :p
