Personally, I play the old standby classes almost exclusively, with stops in the new bard class. And I am almost always human. My group tends to allow alternate classes and monster races (like the current Githzerai monk), and that slightly gets me irked; however, the new options do allow more of a chance of designing the exact character the player had in mind.
 

Personally, I still haven't exhausted the inherent fun potential of the four base classes, so I don't need any more than fighters, clerics, thieves and magic-users. I do use 1e style illusionists, though; they add a flavour to my game I really like. :D
 


It helps if you think of all the new books as "DM books" not Player Books. Even the PHB II. Imagine running a campaign where the only PC class options are Knight, Beguiler, Dragon Shaman and Duskblade. Damn, I really want to do that if I can just convince some people to go for it...
