The do not call list has worked beautifully for me; I hardly ever get any unwanted calls. Unfortunately, I now get tons of unwanted spam faxes trying to sell me vacations & mortgages from shady companies. This is worse than anything, as it ties up my line, wastes paper and ink and I never wanted the ads sent to me. I've had to disable my fax as a result, and the faxes keep coming, they just don't get through. I hear that the main company doing this threatens to sue you if you spam fax them back, refuses to ever pay its fines, and even spam faxed the FCC after they fined them half a million dollars just to prove they were powerless to stop them from spamming. According to a 1999 law, you can collect $500 per spam fax sent to you but you will never collect a dime from the actual sender, you have to go after the company that paid the spam faxers to send you their ad. It's horrible!!!
We should not have to receive junk mail anymore than spam, spam faxes or telemarketing calls. These are all invasive forms of harrassment we did not ask for. Advertising should be restricted to that which we agree/expect to receive, such as TV commercials, billboards and magazine/newspaper ads. Those are ads we can ignore if we want. Everything else is harrassment. And the shady concept of selling our private info to third parties is despicable. None of these invasive forms of advertisements should be free speech as they trample our right to privacy.
I'm all for free speech, but not when that "speech" is invasive ad speech that forces me to take my fax offline, waste time deleting spam email, look through crappy junk mail making sure a real letter or bill isn't hidden between the junk, or be bothered by telemarketers. If I want to receive ads, I will contact the advertiser and ask them to keep me informed. Otherwise, I don't wanna hear from them.
