AP questions

BaldHero

First Post
I am considering picking up one of the adventure paths from paizo.

Before i do, i have questions that maybe can be answered here.
First, are they all written to take place in the same campaign setting?

I saw the setting book available at my flgs, but fifty bucks seems steep considering the page count. It would have to be really super awesome for me to pick it up.

Second, is there any kind of meta plot to them at all, or would it be possible to play them out in any particular order?

Third, do any of them really stand out as being THE one to own?

Thanks.
Also, i have no rant, but i really like this smilie.

They are all set in Golarion. IMHO, the setting is worth the price, but you know what they say about opinions . . . You could get the PDF cheaper and decide if you like it enough to fork over for the hardcopy.

I'd wait on the setting book, though, as Paizo's stated that they'll be converting it to Pathfinder rules and re-releasing it.

There's definitely a meta-plot to each AP, so you'd want to run the installments in the order they're released.

I'm running the Legacy of Fire and getting set to run The Serpent's Skull. I'm playing in Curse of the Crimson Throne, and just started in an ongoing game running Second Darkness. I'm also set to play a 4E conversion of Kingmaker, and have read a little of Council of Thieves.

They're all very different in flavor, and I honestly have no opinion to offer as to which particular one stands out - I love them all! Paizo's forte has always been their adventure writing (again, IMO).

Also, while the rulesets are compatible with very little work, you should be aware that Council of Thieves is the first one released specifically for Pathfinder - everything before that (from Legacy of Fire back) was written for 3.5

Mowgli is right that each set of 6 (ie, each full adventure path) has an overarching plot. However, the different adventure paths are unrelated and can be played completely independently of each other.

If you're considering an AP from Paizo I can't speak more highly of the Kingmaker AP they're currently in the process of releasing. So far volume 1 was sent out and volume 2 has just been sent earlier this week so there's still time.

I think i am going to start with Kingmaker.

I saw it, and it was a little different than the stuff we have been playing, which is WLD.

This raises new questions though.

Will the Kingmaker regency rules or whatever they are called be a tool we can apply to any other campaign, or will it be so tied up in the modules it would need to be rebuilt to use it somewhere else?

I've skimmed the rulership/kingdom building/city building rules and they are not exclusive to the Kingmaker AP. You could certainly use them elsewhere.

Glass Eye has it right, it's probably the most useful part of a module in terms of replayability I've seen as there are tons of buildings for your city (s) and I'm not sure if you can use them all...

I saw the setting book available at my flgs, but fifty bucks seems steep considering the page count. It would have to be really super awesome for me to pick it up.

If you want to focus on an Adventure Path and ignore Golarion as setting, you might consider skipping the big Golarion book and get yourself the special book about the region the AP takes place in. The big setting book is rather scarce on details about specific regions.
