I decided to try a character that was using the "All Power Attack All the Time" role. This was a 3.0 game. I decided to try a half-orc fighter, pouring feats into two-weapon fighting stuff and getting good with the orcish double-ax. (Because of his proud, orcish heritage!).
Disadvantages: 1. It is sometimes (nay, even often) suboptimal to use power attack to the max, all the time. This is because you miss more often. Thus you will do less damage on average. No question about that.
Advantages: 1. Ease of Calculation, which 2. Speeds up play. 3. When you hit, it feels AWESOME! I got lucky in one round and hit twice (one of them a crit.) for 119 points of damage! Woo-hoo! 4. It breaks me of habits that I want to break myself of (I previously found myself sometimes optimizing the mechanical advantages of the character at the expense of just playing the game for fun).
I think I might do this methodology more often! I don't get bothered by missing nearly as much as I get enjoyment out of hitting for juicy damage!
So, I am a believer! Try it yourselves and see! It doesn't look like it should be so fun on paper, but in play it rocks!
