Appraisal Question

First Post
So, the description of the Appraise skill states that it is a DC 12 to appraise "common or well-known objects," and a DC 15 or 20 to appraise "rare or exotic items."

Into which category do most DM's place gems and jewelry? Common/well-known or rare/exotic? The Equipment section describes such items as "trade goods," so I would think they would be common or well-known, but I'm looking for how other DM's treat it.

Thanks!

If it were me, I would say that any gem over 100gp would count as rare and exotic. You're not just identifying the gem name, but how many facets it has, whether it has an impurities, etc when you judge its value.
