I really don't blame you, Henry.
Considering my history of defending 3E as D&D, it's... interesting.

(Henry - have I ever told you how much I've appreciated you and Piratecat posting on dragonsfoot? It's always something that brightens my day when I read your posts.)
I can only say that there are certain features of D&D - elves, dwarves, wizards, fighters, rogues, magic missile spells - that make me feel "at home". Truthfully, I don't really consider Planescape or Dark Sun to be "true D&D" - they just twist a few basic assumptions I have about the game too much!
Again, I think AU is going to be exceptional. I'm using the variant death's door rules in my two 3E campaigns at the moment - much appreciated by my players.
But, being really a different setting for D&D as much as anything, it doesn't excite me as much as a new Dungeon adventure set in the World of Greyhawk. (Or one of Gary's anecdotes about his original Greyhawk campaign.
