arcana unearthed vs revised 3e

So which will be your 3.5.

Now I have more info on arcana unearthed thanks to the logs, and I like everthing I've read.

I have very little info on revised 3e, and I'm not liking what I've seen in the specifics, but I like some og the generalized comments like the 4 classes who are getting the biggest overhaul.(though the Sor should of made that a list of 5 IMO).

I'm going to get both, but my initial impressions are that I'm leaning toward arcana unearthed for my 3.5 game.

Just reading Monte's recent update on magic makes me want to get AU. To be honest I will get 3.5 as well but more becuase it will be worth it in the long run versus any kind of joy or anticipation. I'm not excited by 3.5 but see it as neccessary and needed. Much like an oil change for my car. AU is more like a new car stereo, not neccessary but Oh so worth it.

Just a few thoughts

Neither. I don't have the money to play another $100 for changes, and I know nothing about UA. Most likely just use the 3.5 SRD if I decide to use it at all.

I will be getting 3.5 (although I still say it is 3.1). Like the previous poster, it is like an oil change.

I will not, however, be getting AU -- nothing in it excites me. Thus, it is a cheep, after-market stereo to me. (1)

(1) Nothing against Monte and his work. I have a lot of his work that I like. Nothing in AU, however, seems up my particular alley.

I'll take Revised (but likely only the SRD, but the MM seems tempting), thank you for asking. There are a few things about AU that sounds interesting, but much of sounds too much like "being different just for the sake to be different". I might buy it if it seems good, but the revised edition is a higher priority for now.

I am very much looking forward to AU, the more I read the more the changes seem to be exactly what I am looking for.

On the other hand the more I read about 3.5e the more my position changes from "wait and see" to "this product has an ice cubes chance in hell of getting on my bookshelf". Since they are leaving the magic system unchanged over all, and there are no new classes, this means that psionics support is right out the window which was a big make or break point for me. Combine this with the admitted move toward increased mini orientation and you'll find a book full of things I don't care about/ don't want/ could do myself. I remember when 3e came out, everytime I read about what they were going to do I got more excited about the product, now with 3.5e I find that it is a growing distaste.

My only worry now is if this revision is going to cause a split in the community. I know for instance that I will most likely not be participating in the rules forum when the standard switches since I will be out of the loop.

Monte Cook IS a master spin-doctor!

Hello! AU is just a new Campaign Setting with some alternate rules!

Will it be cool?

Yep.

At first, my initial impression to 3.5 was HORROR. All my beautiful books (mostly non WotC) will become less useful (or harder to fully utilize, and thus the same thing!).

The more I hear about it, the more I realize that 3.5 will benefit the game. Especially for newbies and non-sourcebook aholics like me.

But that doesn't eliminate THE HORROR.

I felt this same HORROR when 3E came out. I convinced myself that I could still use a lot of my 2E stuff for my 3E games. But I haven't.

Have you? Really? How much of it? Really? Sure you have. OK, OK, well you are an exception.

We are faced with 2 choices 1) convert (slowly or whatever) OR 2) cloister, and stop collecting new gaming material, and lose common ground with fellow gamers.

Not much of a choice really. Microsoft, er, I mean WotC, wins.

Unfortunately for me and ALL the third party publishers, I will now be delaying a lot of purchases, and scrutinizing them against what I know will be changed or newly included in 3.5E.

I'm sure I'm not alone. For the next several months, my guess is that distribution orders will probably remain steady (again - for 3rd party books) but I think retailers will probably not move them as fast. This might have some repercussions for 3rd party co's down the road a bit, but they really need the revised SRD to be put out - like NOW!

But Monte Cook is SMART, so his AU books will offer alternatives, not conflicts to current or 3.5 rules.

In the short term, i'll probably completely eliminate buying Adventures unless I know I'll use them right away.

Monster Books, ie ATLAS's upcoming Fantasy Bestiary? Probably not, I need to figure out what these new monster subtype abilites are.

NPC books ie "Denizens of Freeport" by Green Ronin? With mechanics to four key classes changing? Are you kidding?

I now I will be getting the revised 3e. I also will in all probability get the arcana unearthed as well. As to which I am looking forward to more? That is pretty much a toss up. Though I think I will have gotten about the last product that WotC is scheduled to put out for the year once I get the revised books. (This is mostly becuase I havn't heard of anything that has caught my attention.)
