Arcane Classes: Wicca

First Post
Wicca, sometimes called Witchcraft, is a modern interpretation of the "Old Religion" of the indigenous peoples of Northern Europe. Wicca is a religion which worships the forces of nature, a Mother Goddess and her consort, the Horned God (sometimes called the Lord and the Lady). The Goddess is seen as primary, an Earth Mother figure, and is often equated with the moon. The Horned God, often depicted as a man with antlers, is representative of the forest creatures, and the forces of decay and regeneration, of death and rebirth. Wiccans see the Divine in everything and everywhere; in humans, trees, animals, streams, rocks, everything has a Divine Spirit.

Arcane Classes: Wicca contains two new classes (one advanced and one prestige), new feats, new spells, new incantations and new FX items for D20 Modern. Arcane Classes: Wicca is the first in a line of "real-life" magic systems.

Arcane Classes Wicca

It can be interesting to see how modern religions and items are defined in games. This PDF takes the Wicca religion and briefly describes it and gives it some advanced classes and spells. I am not Wicca myself and while I am familiar with the religion I will not pass myself off as an expert or judge how realistic or fanciful this all is to the practices in real life. I am interested in this as a game supplement and how useful it is in the d20 modern game.

Arcane Classes Wicca is one of the newer PDFs by 93 Games Studios. They have been slowly building up a nice library of about thirty or so books. This PDF is seventeen pages in length and fully book marked. The PDF is designed for d20 Modern and while it has some nice descriptive bits will be less useful in other d20 games.

The book starts off with a good introductory look into the Wicca religion. It is not very in-depth but it does seem to cover the basics that one would need to know to play such a character. It gives a very brief run down on the major holidays and the thirteen principles of the religion that were adopted in 1974. It also goes into some of the tools and briefly on the rituals. This section finished up with a lexicon of terms. The detail here is good but more would always be better.

The advanced class and prestige class in the book are the Wiccan and High Priest. The Wiccan is an easy class to get into being able to fully qualify for it at 3rd level. The High Priest builds off of the Wiccan but is still rather easy to get into though one can not qualify for it until ninth level. The Wiccan gets a good amount of abilities. The cast spells that go up to fifth level, gain a familiar, and abilities each level. They also have a good set of class skills and skill points. The High Priest is also a bit on the powerful side. They do not increase the casting ability but actually double the amount of spells that can be cast in a day. And that is very impressive. The classes might prove a little strong compared to other character options.

The book has some new spells and feats and items in it as well. The spells are not just for the Wiccan, other classes are listed and can have access to them. The feats are interesting with reincarnated being my favorite. It gives a character bonus skill points and attribute point making it strong but the idea of it I like.

The PDF is a nice introduction to Wicca for the d20 Modern game. I think it would have been nice if they included a bit more that was not strictly mechanics for characters that might be Wicca but do not want to pursue the classes here.
