Arcane Sight vs. Illusions

Well, you cannot usually determine the exact spell, just the school, with these spells.

And knowing, that there is an illusion spell in place, regardless of the specifics, is often too much already.

One may perform a spellcraft check DC 20+spell level to determine the spell once you can detect it.

Only if you can see or detect the effect of the spell. I'm not sure, if Detect Magic is supposed to do this.

The illusion is the effect of the illusion spell, no? Detect Magic shows that magic is there, and potentially gives the school (with a little time and a check). Knowing that there is a magical effect of some kind present, and it's location, it's then reasonable for a mage to examine the location of the magic aura and see if he can identify the spell more clearly. The illusion itself is the effect, and can be studied independantly of the detect magic spell.

Or am I missing something?

Well, that's not very clearly described, but see it this way... would you allow anyone to roll Spellcraft against DC 20+spell level, whenever they can see any illusion to determine its exact nature, even if they never interact with it or have no means to discern, if it was magical or whatnot?

Because, it would work that way then... seems a bit too easy, no?

I wouldn't go that far - I'd rule (house rule?) that the mage needs to think about it to make the check, even though it doesn't take an action - so unless the player is going around saying "I try to identify the spell effect on X" and rolling the die for virtually every object mentioned, he dosen't get a roll just for his character being able to see the effect in question. He gets a roll for specifically checking. And if he does so too much, I might start introducing house rules to deal with it - perhaps a critical failure option for when he checks an item that is completely mundane, making it seem magical.
