Your categories are just a bit unfortunate... there's no proper place for (a) people working in engineering development, (b) non-web computer artists (application or fine arts), (c) CS students, (d) consultants, freelancers, or contract workers. An "other computer related" option would have been great.

I agree with you, but it was an "impulse poll" on my part. I was just curious. The person who mentioned that those on this board are more likely to be web savvy was correct, but I take that into account when looking at the results.

So many another poll is in order...

G'day

I know how to use a few commercial software packages, plug in printers, add a scanner to a SCSI chain, install memory and expansion cards, and so forth. But what I am really is a stats geek. (Well, and an economics geek...)

Speaking as a stats geek, I have to tell you that if you ran this poll on, say, a message board for dahlia growers, you would be in danger of coming to the conclusion that gardeners are all computer geeks.

Give it up. Your sample is systematically biased.

I'm a database programmer. I work with SAS, SQL, VB, VBA/MS Access, and a proprietary language called ABASE.

Yeah, I guess that would make me a computer geek. I've also noticed an above-average number of gamers amongst my coworkers.

I played video games on UCLA's MedCenter computer before there was Pong. I learned Fortran as a programming language. That's Fortran with no numbers after it! I programmed computers with punch cards. Most of this I've mentioned on another thread. What I didn't mention was that I sat down in front of my first desktop about two years ago! Wow! Thirty years changes a lot! I'm no guru, but I catch on pretty quick and I've ended up being the "resident expert" in a few places. I check marked that it's just a tool.

Hey, let me have my fun.

I started with the baseline assumption that the people here can use a computer. I was interested to know how many of the gamers on this site were working in the computer field in a general sense. You're right that it says less about "gamers" in general, but I think it does tell something of gamers on ENworld at least. I could be wrong.

I study (what is the English expression for "Informatik") computer science (?), target is "Diplom Informatiker". If everything works really well, I will be finished in 3 and a half year.

I can program a bit Pascal (we could lean a bit in school) and Java (I learned at least the basics in the first half year on the University.)

I am still unsure what I am aiming for - I am not a computer gury, definetely not - but probably somewhere in the computer industry, preferably connected somehow with physics.

Worked with mainframe for 22 years, PC for almost as long, write a little code, create web pages, show people 'how to' do simple task, have title computer operations supervisor, BUT still do not think of myself as a guru.

I'm a librarian, and my title is "Electronic REsources Librarian". I'm very good at searching the web, and I teach intro to web and intro to computer classes; ie "This is the mouse. It rolls on the table" kind of thing!

So while I know very little about the hardware of a computer, and can do just the basics of routine maintenance, I'm fairly knowledgeable about user-side stuff, and am learning web design.

Where does that put me?

Geek? Sure.
Computer Geek? Nope.

I'm a grahpic designer, and while I use a computer at work (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc), I could go back to my drafting table, airbrush and manual typesetter if I had to.

Which would really, really suck ;)
