I think it depends on both campaign setting and level range.
In low magic settings and in the lower levels equipment isn't very important. In high magic settings and in the higher levels it's the opposite.
I know that IMC all of the players would rather lose all of their items than die, except for their weapons of legacy. Losing one of those truly hurts!
