Are the sample CoC adventures any good?

As I stated in other recent threads, I just played CoC for the first time this past weekend and absolutley the loved the experience!! I already have a group shaping up which I will be DMing, and wanted to know what folks thought about the sample adventures provided at the back of the CoC d20 book. I also downloaded the "Jenkin Lives" story from WotC, and if you've got any thoughts on this adventure please share them too.

Finally, if any CoC DM's want to share their suggestions for getting a campaign started effectively, I'm all ears :). Thanks in advance!!

there was one in game trader by Monte Cook which was pretty cool as well. You might be able to download it from their site?

Anyway, I'd really recomend making a time line for any adventure before you run it. that way you can make sure you've read through everything. sometimes little bits of info comeup in a para at the end, that you needed to have remembered at some point earlier in the game. and that's irritating for players and DMs alike.

I personally did not care for the D20 scenario's in the book...just not "lovecrafty" enough for me.

IMO, the best intro to the game is the first scenario written for the game..it's been in every Chasoium Release of CoC since 1981..it's called (oddly enough) "the Haunted House"....great starting off adventure..freaks people out.

Conversion is simple..I highly suggest you grab some of the BRP CoC materials..the vast majority of it is most excellent.

Off the top of my head, Escape from Innsmouth, Beyond the Mountains of Madness, Shadows of Yog Sothoth ,The Fungi from Yuggoth,Masks of Nyarlathotep,Trail of Tsathogghua, and Adventures in Arkham Country...most of these are entire campigns of small, medium, or humongous size and scope. Some are OOP , but you can usually find them on Ebay.

Also I believe Dunwich has been re-released and Arkham is to be soon..both of these have D20 stats.

Check out www.chaosium.com for all kinds of Cthulhu goodness!

Thank you both for the suggestions. I'll look for the Monte Cook adventure, and begin browsing my local hobby shops for some of the Chaosium material.

this may or may not bother you, but some of the chaosium d20 stuff reportedly has fairly dodgy stats for npcs etc.

"The End of Paradise" is a nice mixture of scripted and open adventuring with a pretty creepy ending. I haven't tried the other one. Monte's adventure from Game Trade should be available on his site.

Make sure to pick up Chaosium's Gamemaster Pack. Not only does it have the obligatory (and well done) GM screen, but extremely handy NPC and monster sheets, along with the errata, detaild conversion notes, and a better-designed Investigator sheet.

Good luck with running the game - let us know how the first session goes!

Later,
Matt

The Monte Cook one is called "Infest" FOUND HERE. Fo a good site for CoC informational links GO HERE.

As for the D20 Dual stats stuff... I have Dunwich and I am loving it. The d20 conversions seem kind of like an afterthought, but they save you from a few hours of actually figuring out the stats for everyone. Since I got d20 CoC I have been working with BRP (Basic RolePlay the Chaosium system) stuff and I can do most of the conversions in my head. If you are looking for a great way to do conversions, get the d20 GM screen from Chaosium (You can get this at any online bookstore pretty much even WALMART ) It has a cool little adventure as well as a nice screen and a section on how to make conversions for BRP to d20. The Dunwich book is really great (albet that the underground section could have been a bit more orginised). It is a huge campeign setting and I could easily fill months and months of gaming time into the world that is presented for exploration inside of Dunwich. Sometimes the ammount of detail that is put into the families is just ... creepy. It is one of the few source books (Yes I conseider it more of a source book than an adventure) that I can and have read front to back. I am working on it a second time then I will put up a review of it when I am finished. Unfortunatly though for just being a reprint it is chock full of typos and printing errors. But the content can't be beat.

If you have anyother questions just please ask. I saw you on the other thread so I hope that you checked out my site (www.shapermc.com). I will hopefully be getting my PC back by the end of the week and have the new adventure on the web soon.

Good luck!

** I did download "Infest", thanks for the link! Game Trade didn't have the download available, and initially I wasn't finding it on Monte's site.

** Anyone have suggestions on where to find the Gamemaster's Pack in stock? The few sites (including Chaosium) I've checked are currently out of stock with no guesstimate as two when it will be available.

** I liked your site Shapermc -- a very nice set up! I'd like to order Dunwich (and maybe later Arkham) and the Gamemaster Pack at one time to save on shipping, but thanks for the tip.

** Anyone tried the free adventures available at Chaosium?

** Finally, I promise to post a thread regarding our fledgling group's first crack at CoC later this month...I hope.

Games Plus had it last time I checked and does mail order. Noble Knight is a good online company, as already mentioned.

Definitely keep us posted as to your campaign!
