Are there avid gamers out there who hate cons?

I've been to one convention in my life - Arisia, in Boston.

Too funny...that's ususally held like 3 blocks from my apartment. And yeah...I've heard some real horror stories from that con...ouch

I've been to several, yes. Hate em? Well - local ones are kinda so-so.

But when it comes to Gencon? No. You can't hate Gencon.

I was at Gencon for its last stand at Milwaukee's MECCA.

I had always wanted to go to Gencon and never had until then. It was a blast. Friends of mine in my gaming circle have gone the past two Gencons at Indy and were getting a little blase over it. They decided to sit this one out.

I'll be going next time out. And with a chance to meet a lot of ENworlders face to face, it'll be a whole experience for me next time as well.

I got to admit - I'm not in Indy right now and it's bugging me :(

Ah well....

It depends on the con, and whether it regularly dissapoints me two or three years in a row. That still hasn't happened yet, although there's at least one Australian convention I'm unlikely to attend for a whole weekend in a hurry.

I've got no interest in either sort of convention. When it comes to both gaming and socialising, I can only enjoy it when I know the people I'm with.

So perhaps if I could convince all of my friends to fly from Sydney to Indianapolis, and we only played in games together run by one of our number . . . ;)

I love cons because there are so many people there just to have fun! I was able to go to a few GenCons in the 90s and hope to get to another one in the next year or so with my wife and daughter so we can enjoy it together. :) I'll miss taking them to the Safe House, but we can try to go to one somewhere, someday.

Funny, that was the first time I went to GenCon too. :)
It was fun, I'd really like to go again, but my friends are pretty apathetic about it and, well... money is always a concern.

What type of cons first off? When I was growing up, there had been a split between the fandom cons and the gaming cons. Some people went to both but for the most part each group disdained the other because they saw them as losers who needed to get a life. At the gaming cons, there were games and lots of games and everybody did nothing but buy and play games 24 hours a day all weekend while at fandom cons they dressed in costume, spoke in fake accents, filked, and drank.

Hmm. We don't get that distinction over here in Finland. It's all in the same con. The roleplayers, cosplayers, larpers, M:tG players, miniatures players and boardgamers are all in the same place for the weekend, affording one a wide variety of things to do. Personally, I like it, since I could never focus solely on games for a whole weekend, anyway. Now there's all these speeches and presentations and shows I can check out and be amused by between sessions.

Then there's this old caste of grognards who disdain con-goers and see them as losers who need to get a life...

I'm sure there are several. I know a few that don't like the crowds and the noise. Some don't really feel the need to go to cons to play games, since they have a full plate at home. I don't feel the need to go to many at all, not like I used to: the main reason I went was to see and find out about all the Cool Stuff I'd never heard about. Now, thanks to the net and places like this full of gaming news, I don't much feel the need. I hear about practically everything and I can order Cool Stuff whenever I want, not just once a year.
