Are there avid gamers out there who hate cons?

I detest cons. They always seem full of weird people who need a few grooming lessons. I would go to GenCon though, just to see it one time.

Why don't people who sail, or people who collect baseball cards, or play bridge have this same ridiculous issue?

Well, I sail, and I'd just imagine that you've never encountered someone who's been on watch for a long period of time, getting hit with sometimes-nasty seawater. ;)

Of course, most sailors do eventually take showers - even if they're just rain-showers ... :D

So do I and it was probably a bad example*...but I think you know what I was driving at

But seriously (and I know I am ranting), this part of the culture pisses me off to no end...

* I managed to turtle a Cape Cod the other day on the Charles...whoever has been telling us that the river is being cleaned up has been telling big ol' lies. I was stinky after being in that water.

Well, there's a lot of factors to the general smelliness at cons:

1) A lot of people at cons spend several days just trundling from gaming table to gaming table. They stay up for most of a day - or several days - just sitting in chairs, eating junk food, and generally just stewing in their juices under cramped conditions.

2) Most con rooms are poorly ventilated, and stuffed to the rafters with people all day long. The air gets stale, and there isn't a lot of chance for it to cycle through, because game cons run all day and all night.

3) A lot of gamers are very, um, chubby. Chubby people sweat, alot. Combine that with number 1 and 2, and you've got Con stink.

Ah...good point. Personally, I had in mind something like GenCon, which I "assume" combines elements of both the types of cons you are talking about.

Based on the differences you described, I think I would go for and enjoy the gaming elements of the con and be bemused by the fan side of the con. Just yesterday, I was reading the website of some woman (yes, I am probably the last person on Earth to know about her) who dresses as a nun each and every at GenCon. The term nun is used loosely.

Is her nun's habit made of pvc? We called her the Vinyl Nun last year. I had my pic made with her.

I'm lucky - I only ended up in the Charles after they stopped requiring tetanus shots. :)

Its not that i don't like them, I don't understand why people would stay there for days.

I have been to GenCon once. Had a great time walking through the distributor booths and shopping. Of course that only took like 3 hours, and that included standing in line to see Claudia Christian. After that, I was done. It was like one big gaming superstore that you love to visit once a year, but once done shopping.... what else is there?

I am always how surprised that people get so excited about GenCon. It was great for introducing me to new companies and products I ahdn't heard of before, but most of the rest is just stuff I can find in my FLGS.

Ayup

Hence, the notation that the term "nun" was being used loosely...I wish I could remember the link.
