D&D 5E Are you buying less 5e Material?

Are you buying less D&D 5e material than you did when 5e was newer?

  • I am buying more but it's mostly due to 3rd party material

Now that I am running a campaign I spend more money on terrain and books with monsters in them, and less buying every new WOTC D&D adventure as a thing to read and then not run.

I've basically stopped. I gave up on the adventures after "Storm King's Thunder" (though I made an exception for "Rime of the Frostmaiden"), gave up on the rules supplements after "Tasha's", and have given up on the settings after "Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft". Plus, I have plenty of monsters, so I'm done with those.

So there isn't really much of anything left. I'll get the new starter set when it comes, in the hope of the next "Lost Mine", but otherwise I'm done until 2024, and even that's doubtful.

I do buy some items from DMs Guild, but even that was mostly monsters, so is tapering off.

Yes, I am buying less 5e material than I used to. I’ve fallen behind on the hardcover books, and most of the last few I’ve gotten were gifts.

I’ve also stopped buying minis on the singles market because the international shipping is ridiculous. I also hardly ever use minis these days.

I feel like I'm buying less. I haven't bought the candle keep book and likely won't get the next adventure anthology, whatever that is. I've missed a couple adventure paths as well. I have still bought stuff on dndbeyond, partially because of covid. I guess once I was fairly well set up on dndbeyond, it just moved to feeling like I'm buying less, maybe my buying patterns haven't changed much, it's just mostly online purchases now.

Until 2021, official 5E books were a guaranteed buy for me, typically pre-ordered from my FLGS and picked up ASAP after release. (There was one exception, Acq Inc, but I eventually bought it on sale.) Since 2021, I've become very picky, waiting for reviews before making any purchase decisions. And even if I decide to buy, I'm not in a rush.

The last official book I bought was Strixhaven, a few months ago, basically as a pity purchase from a struggling game store. I do intend to buy Call of the Netherdeep, eventually; I'm also interested in Radiant Citadel, but still gonna wait for reviews. I'm not interested in purchasing MOTM, and very definitely waiting for reviews of Spelljammer and Dragonlance. (I also admit to little enthusiasm for 2024 edition, but they have two years to change my mind.)

I guess my interest in 5E 3P products has gone up a little, thinking about it, as my interest in official stuff has cooled. But what I buy in terms of physical books depends on what's in stock at the FLGS, and I only go to my FLGS once every few months anymore (picking up pre-orders used to be my excuse), so I can't really say it's shifted my 3P buying habits. I'm still a sucker for sales on DriveThruRPG and DM Guild, though.

Mind, I'm also way behind on reading the 5E material I have, both physical and digital, so that certainly isn't helping...

So far, my purchasing habits haven't changed one iota but since TCoE I feel that the edition is on power creep curve and is taking a direction that no longer fits with my expectations. Even some 3PP are going in the same direction so I am less and less sure that my money will go into 5ed anymore... I wait and see 2024. After that it will be evident where they are going.

Are you buying less 5e material?
Less than what?

And the answer is no. 5e material has been getting better over time in my experience. Tasha's, for example, was far more interesting than Xanathar's. Monsters of the Multiverse is an excellent update with monsters that are better to use in play. And I'll take the occasionally off the wall Wild Beyond the Witchlight over the 'Dragon Heist' with no dragons in draconic form and that can't tell a heist from embezzlement. As far as I can tell, after a thoroughly mediocre start 5e has been getting much better over time so I'm buying more.

I've always been one to support independent material for systems and I tend to buy, or gifted, most of the core stuff. Only big portion of 5e "official" publishing I don't own is the CR stuff.

I'm also probably an outlier because I buy a core book once or twice a month to donate to clubs or individuals who don't have access to material. I think a lot of people are surprised when they find out what percentage of the even the US population doesn't have access to stuff like that let alone internet.

Yes, but that's admittedly not a new thing. The newest book I have is Tasha's, and that was already an exception. Haven't really been buying or pledging for 5e material since 2018/2019 (official/3rd party) - my enthusiasm for 5e was greatest in the early years (2015-2017) and when it was mostly the three core books + adventure stuff.
