D&D (2024) Are you going to buy the new 2024 D&D Core Books

Getting Halfling art that doesn't freak me out is almost reason enough for a new PHB.

Most of PHB art is bad. But the halfling one is the worst

I'm excited about the new books, at this point, I'm 100% sure I'm picking them up. My decision isn't dumb, it's just that my feelings are different from yours. You are not so convinced these are an automatic buy. I don't think your feelings are dumb, they just aren't in alignment with mine.

Not that this poll is representative but if it was it would be good news for WoTC. Seems most will buy it. I suspect many of the 24% who don’t plan to, never intended to regardless and haven’t been playing 5E so they aren’t really a loss.

Not really.

We're ultra-hardcore types and we're mostly people who have bought every edition of D&D that came out in out lifetime, religiously, like it was our duty. Some of us didn't pick up 3.5E or didn't pick up 4E, but most of us did.

But most people playing D&D are nothing like that. If you tell them they don't need something, most people just won't pick it up. And that's the messaging currently around 2024. Maybe they'll change that messaging? But they risk a backlash if they do so.

WotC is not a company with a lot of positive feeling towards it, and frankly do they really want to suicide bomb their own new edition release? Because that's what they'd be doing.

I think you are underestimating how much WotC seems to enjoy stepping on rakes.

I’m a little confused… if the changes that are being made are largely positive. Why does the volume of changes affect whether you would start using the new edition or not? It seems like people are saying they won’t use 5.2 because there isn’t enough change but that doesn’t make sense to me unless you’re unhappy with 5e (in which why not change)

If a new swimming center opens up down the road thats nicer than the one I use now. I’m not going to refuse to switch because it turns out they don’t also have an ice room and an outdoor spa. It’s either better or it isn’t?

Well, if it’s also more expensive than the one you use now, it would make sense to stick with the one you use now unless the improvements are significant enough to justify the higher price. I think that’s what people are saying, they’re not seeing enough improvements to justify the new purchase (for them. Obviously everyone will have different thresholds).

Sure, maybe, but I'm still goijg to buy them unless they'd something off the wall like reprint 4E or decide to backtrack on racism.

Yeah, you might be right, they do love that wood-and-blood taste of the rake-handle-to-the-face, but if they do, I think the blowback will be so severe they'll have to reverse course.

What I really don't think is that they'll be able to bury grade-A clickbait like "D&D removes entire races, classes from sale, including the ones you played in BG3!" (Half-Elves are the third most popular race in BG3) under "Oh 2024 is so exciting". That doesn't mean they won't think they can.

That 31% maybe is probably more important because it depends on what the finished product looks like.

The best rake to step on is the one where you get to step on a second one by reversing course and making everyone mad at you. So satisfying.

Soo, you'd be fine if someone else categorized your opinion as half-baked or that you don't have the self-awareness to be able to know the truth of your own mind or opinion? Because you didn't just disagree. You dismissed every one of those people. You said their opinion was too early to be accurate or valid. You certainly don't want people doing that to you about your opinions. Why are "No" or "Maybe" the only valid options?

I'm surprised that people taking offense to being considered to not have the mental acuity to make their own decisions is controversial.

A bit of an extreme characterization of the phrase “jump the gun,” don’t you think? I did not say, nor do I believe, that no opinion other than no or maybe is invalid, or that the people who hold other opinions lack mental acuity or self-awareness. I said I think they’re jumping the gun. As in, they’re making up their minds too quickly. That’s not invalid, or stupid, or wrong. It’s just unnecessarily hasty, in my opinion (burárum!) And by the way, that goes for people who have already decided not to buy it as well as people who have already decided to buy it.

This is the internet. I know that my words have been careless when I say something out of pocket that I don't mean, and can get me in trouble. And they have. But you're doubling down. Can you now see the impact of your words in this particular conversation?

I can see that some people are incredibly sensitive to a phrase I consider pretty innocuous. Maybe this is a cultural thing? Is “jumping the gun” an incredibly harsh accusation in other parts of the world?
