I would absolutely buy PDFs of the books. I am not willing to pay for a subscription-based service, because a service can be turned off and taken away later.

If they made a commitment that, say, if the service is ever shut down, you get some form of downloadable version of the thing that you can keep even after the servers shut down, I'd be more interested. But really, I just want to have PDFs.

And obviously, no one is specifically threatening me with violence to force me to try to "pirate" stuff. But if I want a usable PDF of a book, and they won't sell it, and someone else will make it available, then if I want that product, I have no options but "get it from that somebody-else". And I would rather buy the PDFs from Wizards, because then I'd have the thing I want and be supporting them in making it.

I am not too worried about it being shut off later. DDI which some thought was a disaster is still up and running 8 years later. So I see very little risk in the near and medium term of the system being shut down. I don't really care about the long term.

So with DDB we have two choices (A) enjoy while it lasts or (B) worry about a shut down and don't use it. I choose A. Even if it only lasts 5 years or so the cost is minimal.

In other words, you're not willing to stand by your statements.
Oh I stand by my statements. If anything, and people here that know me, know that I stick by my statements. WoTc is trying to push the rental of digital tools which cost a hell of a lot less than than printed material but like all things they seem to over do it. As an RPG company, Paizo will always be the best because they actually give their customers what they want and that is PDF's. Success is not defined by how much money you make but what the customer feels they have gotten out of it. D&D Beyond, in my opinion, is going to be another Sword Coast Legends and it's a shame. If this came with a live VTT and sold PDF's for really really cheap then I could see paying a sub only but as it stands right now no. I can see the majority of gamers saying no thanks.

1. You do not have to pay a subscription at all. You're able to use any content you purchase without one. This has been mentioned many times.
2. I understand the concerns about the risk of losing access to a tool you've paid money for. I really do. However, this doesn't seem likely in at least the near and medium term. Curse, by all indications, is doing this the right way. They're working very hard to provide a tool that is useful and will be around for the considerable future.
3. DDI still works for people who've maintained their subscriptions.
4. I find it somewhat illogical that you're willing to pay for a PDF, but not willing to pay for a vastly superior product for fear that it might be shut down some day. DDB is so much more useful than a PDF that the value I'd get out of it for, say, three years, is orders of magnitude greater than I would get out of having a PDF for eternity.

Don't have a problem with what you are saying, except the bolded part is your opinion, because for a lot of people/companies, success/happiness is related to how much money they make.

Subscriptions are in no way required. You purchase content separately and don't need a subscription to use it.

True, but I DM a fair bit, and while the Full tier is nice, and decently priced, I can't afford another subscription.
Also, seems like the primary access is via a browser and internet, and while I do have a phone for the little app,
I always prefer standalone apps(lications). Maybe if they put it into the Windows 10 Store or an installable program.
And doesn't require internet other than for updates or new datasets.
Just my personal preference.
