Area push

All I have to say is that there are certain area bursts that specify that they push the enemy away from the center of the burst, but they call themselves out as exceptions. What are they? Dunno off hand, but I do remember reading at least a couple of 'em.

Well, first, yeah, I'm pretty much talking about whether or not this ought to be a houserule.

I don't see any mechanical brokenness that would come of such push/pull originating from the burst's center, and it makes more sense to me that a fireball with this boost would push people away from the center rather than away from me (and thus, sometimes, towards the center of the burst).

The origin of the effect for game purposes might not be the physical source of the actual blast.

If there's no rule I'm missing that says it works that way RAW, and if there's no compelling reason not to, I'll just act like that's what the rule is. (It's only really an issue because I have a player who may be getting one of those Orbs!)

The rule:

Push: When you push a creature, each square you move it must place it farther away from you.

RAW, it's pretty clear, and RAI, if they say 'push' they mean you. Exceptions are explicitly noted. Range doesn't change this (there's a ton of powers that work at a distance that are supposed to be motion towards or away from the caster, so to do it 'case-by-case' isn't obvious, a problem they've worked hard to avoid)

Yes, he knows that - and yet has exercised his discretion as a DM to decide that for him it makes most sense to push from the center of the burst.

Since he's come up with a decision that suits him after listening to various evidence, I'm going to close this thread so that it doesn't run the risk of turning into people browbeating him about his choices.

Regards,
