Arkham Horror hurts my head . . .

So my copy of Arkham Horror arrived yesterday. Very cool looking game.

I thought it might be fun to play today, taking breaks throughout the day to play a turn. I may need to devote more time to the game, though, since just the setup alone is complicated.

It really looks like it's going to be a fun game. It's just not as quick to get started as I had hoped.

(Not that anyone cares. I just wanted to share. :) )

Phil,

It's an awesome game. I played a game at Origins that took all night. We figured out about halfway through what we were doing and still almost 'won'. Figured out that only one of the end bad guys is really beatable in combat. The rest you just have to fend off as long as possible.

The rather steep price (for a boardgame) is the only factor keeping me from purchasing Arkham Horror myself.

I bought it, then a friend bought it after seeing mine. We've played it a total of five times now. Sunday before last we played for 3 1/2 hours, then 3 hours the next Sunday (same game, we paused it) and finally won. YES, it is a little complicated game, it really really helps to print off the online instructions and have one player always telling everyone which phase is coming up.

Very fun game, pretty hard to win though, but we finally managed to get 6 gates sealed. I don't if we're doing something wrong, but we haven't had a GOO wake up yet. We close gates as fast as we can, so they haven't woken up from that yet, and their track never maxes out either.

Arkham Horror is definitely the most original board game i've ever played, but we're taking a break from it until next year.

Now i gotta figure out to play that Game of Thrones board game i bought from Fantasy Flight.....

The setup is very complicated but the game is very much worth it. I played it twice with a full eight players on Halloween and the day after Halloween. (It was cool in that it was actually two completely different sets of groups at my house, with my dungeons and dragons game that Sunday, I had 22 seperarte people gaming at my apartment that weekend--- being a bachelor rocks)

The first day I played it with a bunch of nongamers. I find that if you go on the website and use the errata rules the creator posted you'll be fine playing with newbies. Essentially you want to have a "game master" who runs everything, because all of the more complicated things are better handled by someoen whom understands gaming.

The second group was filled with gamers and the game went by super quick. We started at 10 and finished at 1 (wheras before we started at 9 and finished at 2). Partly it was because I was with all gamers and partly because I was more familiar with what I needed to cut out and waht I didn't. We had a blast both times. I also find that if you go the extra mile and dim the lights a bit, add some spooky sound effect music and go in the kitchen literally normal but jump out of it in a black hood with a scream mask on and a big knife you stashed in the laundray hamper... you can really add to the atmosphere.

Already played it 5 or 6 times with different people. So far everybody loved that game.

It's complex, sure, but it's not that difficult. People who also play RPGs should have an easy time learing the rules.

Sounds like you're playing solo, right? Please let me know how it played, because I'm curious :)

I'll get to play multi-player tonight. Hopefully I'll be comfortable enough with the game to play a solo session on Monday.

Yep, awesome game. I know someone who knows someone who is playtesting the expansion for that game. So jealous. :]

It isn't TOO difficult to figure out, though when I was playing, one person knew the rules. It seems a lot to handle right away, but when actually playing, it's a lot more simple than it seems, or at least that was my impression.

Expansion... that sounds awesome. Any hints at whats going to be included in it? different era? more monsters? more people?

LOVE ARKHAM HORROR.

Played it twice. Once, we successfully closed all the gates. The other time, we were forced to do battle with the some GOO I can't remember the name off, we one but lost several palyers.
