Anyone able to point me to some good Damage Reduction instead of AC bonus variant systems. I'm sure at least a few people have put alot of work into a system like this.

Thanks Plane sailing,

your system is closer to what I'm looking for.
(though you spelled "armour" wrong :) I'd still like something that is just along the lines of 1/2 of the armor's bonus goes to AC, 1/2 is damage reduction. our system makes a guy with a shortsword nearly unable to harm someone is platemail (which may or may not be realistic).

I like the Active Parrying rule.

You could also check out the simple system which I have on my website (see .sig)

Cheers

I like the armor rules on your website.....I may try them out

How have they been working for you?

...and I don't see anything wrong with the way you spelled armor..:D

Consider the possibility of giving everyone a limited form of Power Attack, which lets them convert an attack bonus into a damage bonus. The flavour text for Power Attack talks about making a heavy but ungainly blow, but the mechanic could just as easily be used to represent a "called shot" -- taking your time to aim for vulnerable spots in an opponent's armour. This would let the guy with a dagger take down someone in full plate, by aiming for the joints, eye slits, etc.

hmm... just thinking that a system that reduces "to hit" AC and converts it to Damage reduction just might cause something like Power Attack to become too powerful.

Probably needs lots of play testing.

This is exactly the mechanic which I've been using, although I don't think I've got it up on the website yet (must-do-update!). I was worried that it would render Power Attack useless, but the main thing that I see PA used for is as a prereq for cleave anyhow...

As my players reach higher levels I've been finding that several monsters have been given arbitrarily high "natural armour" values, so I'm in the process of limiting them based upon the size of the creature and the toughness of its exterior. I'll update the website with that info when its ready.

Cheers
