Arms and Armour - is it any good?

I flipped through a copy in the store today.

It looked pretty nice. Lots of flashy art, mostly digital stuff.

If you want a ton of minor variations on weapons and armor, this is for you.

In my roughly 5 minute glance through I felt a lot of the items or abilities were either really odd or really un-original. Not that there weren't any cool things, but they seemed a minority to me. For example, there was an item that was a pair of boots (or leggings ???) that let you air walk 1/day. I feel I could go through the PH and come up with literally hundreds of magic items that simply cast spells for you.

If you don't have MaoF, buy that first. If you do have it and still want more swords of <verb>ing and shields of <adjective>ness, then you probably want this book.

For me, at $25, I did not consider it for very long. When I first picked it up, I assumed it would be about $15 based on other books of comparable size.

In fairness, I am pretty picky. I am sure that some people who want more and more published magic items will think this book is great. And I will not argue with them.

Review...

That review sounded more like an ad than a review. He just kept blathering on and on about how great it was, but it seemed rather uninteresting. Seriously, now many different variations can you have with the limited values set? A claymore, to me, would be pretty much a greatsword. Triple dagger? 1d4 crit 18-20/x2, exotic weapon. Gee, I could make a whole slew of weapons. Who needs that book? Not me.

I have a better idea...why not wait for another review, that is not by a playtester before passing judgement? I looked at it today, and found it quite interesting. Now I just need to convince my wife to let me spend the $$$.

Later!

I will admit that when I first heard about this book I thought of an Arms and Equipment Guide for 3e and was exited, then I saw the price. $24.95 for a 96 page soft cover seems a little pricey to me but we've heard how people in this field seem to think that the products for this game are underpriced but that's for another thread.

I definately want to look at this one first before I purchase it so I hope my local store will get it in soon. I'd like to get this at work to get my discount but I don't think I'll be able to, maybe if I do purchase it I'll either get it from the EN World store or Talon, at least I'll get some form of discount on it.

I hope to read several reviews on this one soon.

It seems pricy at first, but then it's a full color supplement on nice glossy paper so that's probably why the price got jacked up.

Hi All,

there is a German review on RPGgate and they gave it a 4.3 rating. And as people have noted the supplement's price is due to it being full colour etc. (And being a contributor like Samnell, I too am biased so won't talk about it, just point people to reviews :) )

Well, I had a hand in the writing and proofreading of this one, and I can at least attest for that bit of the book - if you **ever** lack (or ever have lacked) for ideas for new and inventive armor and weapons in your campaign - get this book. It is well worth it. :)

Olive, I think, the guy in the link who wrote that review probably was involved production of it... who else would bother counting number of weapons and armors... details a common buyer would blabber about...

Um. When I did my review of Seas of Blood and Seafarer's handbook I counted feats, spells, monsters, and ships in each.

I wasn't involved in the production of either one, I just thought that it was useful information for people who were considering buying one of the books.

I wasn't involved with this book either.

That said...I realize the price is high because it's full color, but how much does full color & glossy paper really add to a book like this? For a monsters book like Minions, sure, but for pictures of weapons and armor, wouldn't B&W suffice?

Now that I can't answer :) I have no idea, I suppose it depends on the types of illustrations. Maybe one of the people who have their copy can comment?
