You have a Level 4, Quality 10 book on Magic Lore in your hands, Strange Creatures, by Philarmius of Bonisagus. If you read it, you gain the 10 experience in the Magic Lore ability.

Apart from Thomas, that brings everyone to Summer, 1220.

Durenmar are happy to have you, and Heidi tells you two laboratories are free for your use if required.

What would you like to do?

Spring 1220

Leo asks the Mercer House to arrange a meeting with Horst, if possible within this season (Spring 1220). He also makes his way to Fenghled House, if there is a Fengheld representative there, in hopes of communicating with the Colonge Chapter House and, perhaps, with Horst.

Rather naive of him, isn't it?

Summer 1220

When Summer 1220 arrives, Leo decides they've all loitered around Durenmar long enough. He asks all the magi to gather to a meeting, to discuss what to do now that they've had a season to weigh their options. In the meeting, he thanks all for coming, and starts the meeting, as if he was the chairman, as soon as everyone appears.

Rather presumptuous of him, isn't it?

"Sodales", he begins, "Now that all are here, let us begin. I have spent the past months looking for information on the Rhine Gorge, looking for a prime place to start a new covenant. I'm sure you too have given the matter some thought. Let us share our insights, and decide on a course of action. Perhaps, I shall begin."

Leo tells the others of the nature and demise of the past covenants: Rudiaria, Oakdell, Treverorum, and Rheinstein. He then proceeds to describe his conclusions. "As you can see, the 'curse' of the Rhine Gorge lies with its mundane population. I believe it would be best to settle our covenant deep in the wilderness, away from these woes. Unfortunately, the Westerwald seems to be the only forest of considerable size in the area. I say 'unfortunately', for while it is large it appears to lack a Magical spirit, and it is doubtful a Magical aura could be found within it. The former covenant of Oakdell was too secretive for its aura to be determined, but it seems more likely to be aligned with the Faerie powers. Nevertheless, I think the forest would be our best bet to avoid the curse of the gorge, and to stay as far as possible from the bishop of Trier. I confess that I myself also find the idea of a forest, even a mundane one, around us to be very comforting. I suggest we set out at once in an expedition to examine the Westerwald, and, perhaps, locate a suitable place within it."

There is a representative Redcap, actually a Gifted Mercere maga named Yeonis at Durenmar. She is a Durenmar magi, and can certainly organise a message to Horst, but a meeting would require you to go to Fengheld itself, as that is where he is currently. He is not going to come to you - he is ranked as a Master, though he is unGifted.

The Fengheld House at Durenmar has a Bonisagi named Consecratus, who is very willing to send a message to the chapter house in Cologne. What messages would you like to send?

He mentions to you specifically that starting a Fengheld chapter house is a much easier proposition than a full covenant; no asking permission of the current covenants, full Mercer support from the moment you set up, and mundane economic matters can be dealt with quite easily. As well as that, Fengheld are known for their willingness to share their respectable library, and books can be swapped out with the main covenant as much as you wish.

"It might be worth our time checking up on the old covenants, even if we build a new one," Ilshana suggests brightly. "I'm especially keen to see Oakdell...and Rheinstein! In fact, we really must go there soon. I'm just aching to see the valley there. Imagine a place where no magic has been done for twenty years! It will be almost as if we were the first magi ever to set foot there!"

Spring 1220

Leo thanks Yeonis, but says that a travel to Fengheld would be too time-consuming at this point. Perhaps later, but for the time being he'd be glad to settle for a letter. He soon writes one, and sends it through Yeonis. After brief consideration, he settles on the note of flattery.

To Master Horst, Greetings.

I, Leo Ilfetwis of House Bjornaer, do beseech your advice. I have been entrusted with the establishment of a new covenant in the Rhine Gorge, and I thought to seek for your advice on the locale. I am told you traveled this area extensively for many years, and I am sure any insights that you would care to share would be invaluable. I am particularly interested in the fate of Rheinstein, of which the Tribunal's records are dim but I understand you witnessed, or came close to it. I would also appreciate any information on the area's forests that you might provide.

I trust that you will forgive me for not coming to see you in person. I am new to this Tribunal, and I am sure I would soon find the time to visit Fengheld in person. When I do, I'll be sure to express my gratitude for your advice in person.

Respectfully yours,
Leo

Leo's response to Consecratus is similar. He thanks him for the offer to establish a chapter house, but says he has not heard of chapter houses before, and isn't certain he is free to make this choice. At any rate he intends to visit Fengheld itself in the not-so-distant future, and he will be in a better position to reply then. He does, however, send a letter to Colonge.

Sodales,

I, Leo Ilfetwis of House Bjornaer, send you greetings. I wish to inform you that I have been tasked with establishing a new covenant in the Rhine Gorge, and so that we will soon be neighbors. I wish us to be good neighbors, and for this purpose I would like to know what interests you have in the region, so that we would not accidentally hamper them. If it is your will, I intend to visit the area within a few months, and we could talk in person then. Until then, I am to be found in Durenmar.

May Hermes guide your way,
Leo Ilfetwis

Summer 1220

Leo smiles bitterly. "I think the mundane cities will put a dint on the areas's primeval magic. But yes, I agree - we should definitely see these places. Indeed, I suggest we make a thorough examination of the region, traveling along the Rhine from Bingen, and Rudiaria, to the site of Rhinestein, then down the Rhine towards Koblenz, taking an Easten tour into the Westerwald in search of Oakdell. From there, we could sail up the Mosel river to reach Trier, but I suggest we avoid this place, and its bishop. I instead intend to follow the Rhine north, to Colonge, to visit the Fengheld Chapter House there."

He draws a rough map as he talks, tracing out the places he talks of on the face of the table with his finger.

"Which reminds me - I have sent word to the Mercer House at the covenant of Fengheld, asking its Master for advice - he is familiar with this territory. And there is also the Chapter House of Fengheld, in Colonge. Fengheld's representative here also suggested that we establish a chapter house instead of an independent covenant, but that is clearly against our instructions. It seems that whenever I look, there is the mark of Fengheld - it may have many interests in the area."

OOC: Leo is tracing out the map using a spontaneous spell: he is creating the image ontop of the table. This is CrIm Base 1, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter, for CrIm3. His Casting Total is 0 (no relevant Arts and Sta is 0)+7 (aura)+simple die, so he automatically reaches the needed total of 6 - and spends a fatigue level. This assumes the aura is indeed 7, as GotF says IIRC. In case it isn't, his roll is 1; if it's a stress die, the second roll is 10, which is a waste of a perfectly good roll.

Again, I understand his Deleterious Circumstances to halve the bonus to the roll (in this case 0), not the roll itself.

You will have to excuse me. Since my social skills are quite ... low, I will leave the socialites to you.
Gorgamesh apologize to his fellow comrades
I prefer dark libraries and dusty laboratories and away from people but I will join for the journey in the Rhine valley. In the mean time I will try to learn on the people I’m so trying to avoid.

Gorgamesh wants to know about certain figures of power and places of divine worship
