Artifacts and Ethereal Plane Rules.

First Post
Forgive me if this has been asked before, I just joined and didn't see it posted.

I have a character wearing a cloak in a game that gives the ethereal jaunt ability. This is a "castle and crusades" game however we are using most "d&d" rules when not available or clear in c&c.

My character is in possession of an artifact (minor or major, not sure). If I leave the Prime material plane and enter the ethereal plane with the artifact in my possession, will the item leave with me or will it remain on the material plane while I am on the ethereal plane?

Trying to get this ironed out before my group meets in a few hours.

If anyone knows of this mentioned in any of the Planar Handbooks, let me know which one as I have just about every 3rd and 3.5 handbook released.

Thanks, Lord Seurek

Unless there is a specific reason stated in the artifact's description (or for artifacts in general) that prevents it from being transported with you ethereally (and/or possibly from the prime), I do not see why it would not go with you. Ethereal Jaunt states that "You become ethereal, along with your equipment." If you have the artifact on your person it becomes 'your equipment' and would be transported. I do not see why it would be prevented.

Is there more that we should know that would help us with this? Is the artifact really big?

Disclaimer: I am not familiar with C&C. If I remember correctly, I have heard that it is just D&D simplified.

Oh, and welcome to the boards. This is a great place with great people.

Your possesions go with you during an ethereal jaunt.

Is there something that would lead you to believe that this might not be the case for the artifact?

Thanks for the quick replies and the welcome!
I assumed that if it is in my possession, it would go with me as do all of my equipment.

The item is a soul gem, no bigger than a fist. Not sure if it is an 'official artifact' or something the GM created.

This gem was attached to a pedestal by a thin coil of some sorts that was magical and couldn't be broken. I grabbed the gem and entered the ethereal plane. It never cut the coil releasing the gem to me. I guess since it was attached to the pedestal, it wasn't in officially in my possession.

Thru other means, I have it now, so I am assuming that it is just like any other piece of equipment that I have, so it would make the leap with me.....?

Lord Seruek.

AND yeah, castles is like a simplified version of d&d. Since us players are scattered among Can and USA, we use it via skype and gametable/openRPG to wet out role playing lips....

That would be my take, but I applaud your ingenuity. Good player to challenge that DM. ;)

You have it now ('Thru other means, I have it now'), so, yes, it should go with you - 'no strings attached'.

Pun Intended. ;)

Excellent creative solution. However, a DM could easily rule that the magical coil (because it's meant to hold an artifact) could still exist on the ethereal plane, and/or not allow the gem to be transported in such a manner (including teleportation, plane-shifting, etc.)

I agree that, other things being equal, the gem will now become ethereal when you do. The only caveat is that artifacts can sometimes be surprising. Perhaps the gem is bound to the Prime Material Plane in some way.

The gem maybe linked to the Prime Plane, maybe the GM has created it that way, but I will certainly give it it a try to see if I can "get away" with it. The item is linked to my character's history and is needed :) Gonna search the Planar Handbook to see if there is an official ruling on it.

Well, it worked! I managed to go ethereal before action could be done to prevent it with the soul gem!!! Now I just have to get it back to my home town.

2nd question: Any Greyhawk experts out there know the fly-by distance from Verbobnc to Enstad in Celene? (No problem passing "thru" the Kron Hills.) Probably in the campaign setting which I dont own.
