As a DM do you secretly enjoy the obnoxious player who pisses everyone else off?

OK. You really have a weird vision of gaming. But, hey, if you and your group are having a blast ("All the other players were irate at him")

I dunno. You're weird.

Are you related to Chaos-Princess by any chance ?

No relation, I am a bit odd, I really do get a lot of enjoyment out of watching my players interact, usually when we go into a town I'll sit back and let them clamour amongst themselves till they figure out what they are doing and I just play the parts of the npc's. Its chaotic yeah, but I love it. Of course this is only the second time I've dm'd. Our original DM was the best DM ever. I seriously have never had so much fun playing AD&D. I try to emulate his style but I have a lot to improve upon. After he joined the navy the rest of the players took turns DM'ng I was the last one to try it. The rest of the players campaigns sucked I think it takes a certain type of person to be good at it, my first time was horrible but I was running a prehistoric evil campaign, something I always wanted to try as a player. My one player ( the one who always got hit with the d100 of doom) went crazy and everytime Id be like what the hell are you doing? He would reply Im evil! I make them all play good alligned charecters now.

You know what ? Eff it. If you're having fun, then good fo you. Your players won't stay forever, but like you said, this is a learning experience for you. Enjoy.

That said, when you'll get with a different group, or if you meet other D&D players, be prepared to adjust your style to something more "mainstream" (if there is such a thing as mainstream D&D). I highly recommend you peruse the "Rules" forum, there's a lot of good advice in there (I know *I* learned much from that forum).

The first character I ever played was a Cavalier in 1st edition. I was confused no end...

...but I enjoyed every single second of it !

My group has several good role players.

Having said that, one of the players is always pushing the envelope on what is supposed to be a heroic campaign with true mercenary attitudes and combat tactics that threaten other characters lives.

When players aren't having fun, it makes it harder for the GM to do his job. Or at least, that's been my experience.

When I'm GMing Paranoia, which I do weekly, I want all my players to be teamkilling bastards... they'd better all be plotting against each other, vying for favor, etc etc etc.

When I'm not GMing Paranoia, and am playing ANY OTHER GAME, no. I don't want to see any of that. I mean, the guy who does stupid stuff because he doesn't think things through is okay, whether he's normally bright and is only roleplaying that way or really is that dense. That can be fun, and all sorts of play can arise around it. But the person who does it maliciously, on purpose... no. Just.... just no. That's what Paranoia is for. It's a place for that sort of thing, get it out of your system. Don't bring it elsewhere.

No, if someone brings the enjoyment down for the group it's tough to have fun.
Yeah it's no fun if no one else is not having fun. Now it's permissible to chuckle at stupid players but only to yourself. But in the aforemention example, killing someone ELSE's character that's just no right. Killing your own PC is okay.

No.

I've been on the receiving end of that kind of behavior as a player, it sucks.

As a DM if the players are miserable, and it isn't because of the story :p , then I'm not having fun either.

-One of these days I might learn how to spell. Probably not though.
