And I don't have my book, but isn't the full effect of Ascetic Rogue that unarmed damage progresses as though class levels stack, and a sneak attack stunning fist gets the stun DC increased?
Add in Ability Focus... a good Wisdom... and your monk can go toe to toe with a fighter of the same level with pretty good chances to have a stunning impact. Assuming he hits the fighter.

"Assuming he hits" is always the problem with monks... If only there was an official, non-Exalted feat that allowed Wis to replace Str on the attack roll.
