"Smite evil indeed," Zaeryl agrees dryly, "But we're going to use a different direction this time in case she left traps for us. We're going to have to make an assumption here that she had the rock from the collapse moved, but we think it is reasonable, and if we are wrong, it just means we have to travel back out and in the other way."

*Zaeryl leads them to a different cavern entrance.*

"This is where we entered the first time after falling down that ravine. It should lead us on the right path."

*The air is unnaturally still and silent within the caves, as Zaeryl activates Inertial Armour.*

"Put up your powers that are measured in hours here. Depending on our assumption and the length of tracking, the ones that last in tens of minutes may not be enough, particularly if we lose the trail and have to spend an hour regaining it, as is usual for those who track things."

*After all have done so, Zaeryl leads on. There are no Afflicted at all in these tunnels, not even a single lone straggler. It is as if the place is somehow dead. When Zaeryl gets to a certain intersection, he nods and heads forward slightly to peer around a corner just ahead of the group.*

"The rubble has been moved into the western hallway to allow a tripartite egress. This is good. You have a choice here. There may have been a nasty trap or guards left for us at one of the two plausible places she might have expected us to be headed, both of which are, unfortunately, exactly the places we are headed. On the other hand, there may be nothing, and tracking could take an unknown amount of time. If you want to activate powers measured in ten minutes or minutes on the off-chance of a nasty trap, you can, but we would suggest saving as much as possible for when we actually find her, as anything here would just be a delaying tactic. That said, her last delaying tactic was almost deadly...but then, we have grown stronger since then."

Eternity nods in readiness. Once close to the three way she manifests Force Screen for 1pp just in case there is a trap. She lacks anything with durations of greater than 1min/level.

*Zaeryl also manifests a Force Screen.*

"Alright then. The spellcasters just aren't flexible enough on spells to the point that using anything now for them would be a waste. Let us continue."

*Zaeryl leads them straight along the three-way, notably not turning off towards the room where Hulgyr broke the seal. After continuing for a while through several confusing tunnels, he turns left into a side corridor that leads to a shadowy alcove area that has been worked on semi-recently and reappropriated as some sort of religious shrine with a symbol of full red lips on a field of darkness, surrounded by myriad candles, unlit, but arranged in a pattern of sorts.*

"Okay, there's not even any point in checking the treasure compartment. That will be empty at best, trapped at worst. We can look here for tracks, or we can back up and check the room with the evil artifact and try to read the walls. Somebody has Comprehend Languages for that, right?"

(OOC: I may have skipped too far when I did the skip--Zaeryl would have asked Almayce, since he woke up before Michael, to prepare it)

"Actually, we should check the other way first for enemies just so we get some use before the Force Shields w..."

*Suddenly a group of lithe and agile-looking Afflicted seem to appear from nowhere and make a surprise attack on the group!*

(OOC: Almayce and Zaeryl were missed. Hulgyr takes 12, Michael 16, Eternity 15, Ironwolf 11

Initiative--
Zaeryl 20
Eternity 19
Michael 19

Ironwolf 15

"Lovely--they have us surrounded. Not at all a good setup for an area spell and probably a waste for single target. Michael, could you do that whole Smite Evil thing and see how it goes?"

*Zaeryl delays to Michael.*

ooc: To fight as intelligently as possible, I think we'll need a combat map. Barring that, how many of these things are threatening Ironwolf at the moment? Do we think that these agile ambushing aflicted are using sneak attacks? Do they seem to have the claw/claw/bite routines of other afflicted?

(OOC: I can't produce a useful combat map without spending more time than I have available to me for this (I can make them, but it takes me ~1-2 hours and even then they aren't that good). The attacks seemed rather sneaky, and they probably have C/C/B, but not during the surprise round, of course, since they had to Partial Charge.

The Afflicted attacked from all directions. I assumed the 6 PCs were basically spilling into the rather circular alcove to look around (nobody really every made anything else specific)--specifically when it seemed there were no enemies here and even Zaeryl was convinced of that, it would have made sense to look for clues rather than stand in some kind oh hoplite formation. The Afflicted have attacked from all sides. If they really are getting Sneak Attacks, the good news is that they will need to flank, which will be troublesome for them in future rounds.)

(OOC: Yes--this would only have not been the case if they were all bunched up. That being said, manifesting on the defensive is rather easy for someone who is built expecting to have to regain focus. Also, with only 6 Afflicted versus 6 heroes, it may be a waste, though Zaeryl is going to wait for Michael's assault to see what he personally thinks about that. Hulgyr also has two attacks and a cleave when it gets all the way down to him. That could be fun)

Ironwolf will also see what turn the battle takes before his turn, in order to best decide what resources to use. He knows it's important to preserve what can be preserved, but he isn't willing to die in a skirmish for being meek in the use of his abilities.

Currently: 15pp, 17 damage.
