Assassins as a Heroic Archetype?

I know an assassin class has precedent in earlier editions, but isn't it more a job description than a defined character role? Any class or alignment can find a justification for assassinating people.

You know, just to be fair to class names...

So anybody other than me.. questioning this classes name? Assassin is really mundane and martial sounding... (ah I see it is being discussed too)

i had a assassin character who was the third son of the king who was trained at the request of the kings advisor. he was trained as an assassin so he could use his skills to prevent other assassins from taking out the king

As people keep refering to comic book assassins, I'm very surprised no one has mentioned Golgo 13 yet.

As for the 'one shot one kill' comment, any assassin who wants to get the job done had better be able to kill their target quickly or they'll be interfered with/their target removed before they can finish the job. And that just isn't likely to happen in D&D. (Unless they can get them in a situation where no one else is around.)

I had a player who pictured his bards stealth and similar training in that fashion.(he was bodyguarding a princess she called him her shaperone.)

Ah but in real life we are all bloodiable minions (maybe with an unconsciousness saving throw) so killing in one attack isn't a big deal... and sure-strike becomes the preferred attack of "realistic" assassins.

I'm sorry, but for some reason I read this as
"...a quest to infiltrate Nebraska..."

Points of Light in a post-appocalyptic United States with magic?

Uh... yea.

Well, when the end comes, yer all welcome to my house. Bring food.

And water... yea, water.

I read this and kept thinking of Jayne Cobb. Killer for hire, but now, he does good cause that's part of the job, even if he thinks it's dumb. (and he sorta kinda has a family now, though he'd never admit that).
