Assistance needed for New Campaign

I use 43 point buy; or take a set of stats of 17 16 15 14 12 10. I'm here to play a game with HEROS, not "Normal Dudes Go Wander Around in the Woods and Get Eaten". :)

It's all a matter of proportion.

If "normal people" have ability total bonus +0, then 25-pb is "heroic".

(Note that total ability bonus +0 isn't that bad for an NPC -- the Sage with Int 19, Dex 13, all the rest 9, or the Warrior with Str 15, Con 13, Dex 11 and all the rest 9.)

one campaign i was in, we rolled d20's,rerolling anything 10 and under.
another thing i've done is 3d6, reroll 1's and 2's. your lowest is a 9, so what, you're a hero!
and also, if they didnt like their scores for whatever reason could reroll but with like a -2 to put somewhere and another -2 every time they rerolled.
I personally dont like the point buy system, its just too, communist. "Hey, we're all the same! yay!"
I prefer a little more randomosity.

I'm comparing characters with the Forgotten Realms. When my characters are the same level as Drizzt, I want them to have at least a good chance of being able to kick his stupid rear all over the place. You can't do that on 25 pt buy, or even 32. :)

Ah, I see. Yes, in an environment of stat inflation (like the F'n Realms), this is the logical consequence.

Just make sure that all monsters get their stats boosted, too, or you'll start trashing the CR system.

No problem there. They get an average of 3/4 of their possible HD in hit points (so 9 for a d12), plus they get built munchkin-style. :) The "heroic" villians have the same point buy, and even the mooks have 25 or 32 point buy.

One suggestion that will work with players you can trust not to abuse it: Let them choose their stats. Just reserve the right to make them pick again if you think someone is being too much of a powergamer.

Actually that (2d6+6) is pretty close to a roll-up method I had used in the past and really liked. It gives above average but doesn't seem to break the bank.

I appreciate everyones suggestions, they have given me some good ideas on what to do.

The CR system is already completely trashed in Dragonstar, one of the biggest problems with the setting. I've been running a Dragonstar campaign for a while now, and most of the CR's for monster's are totally worthless.

Just a simple example are golems, which become a sad joke in Dragonstar. Simple energy weapons, even the weaker ones, allow a first level party to quickly and easily defeat CR 12 golems (well, okay, at first level, a CR 12 golem will kill them with one hit, but they can stay out of range with cheap energy weapons, and it shows my point anyway ... the CR's are just wrong).
