Assistance needed for New Campaign

This is one of the things my group has done in the past that has worked very well. First, you take 3D6 and roll 6 times, like a normal low-powered game. Then, using the table given for point-buy in the DMG, you get an additional 10 points to spread, using the stats rolled on 3D6 instead of starting at 8. There is still quite a bit of random generation, you can still roll high scores, and anyone who rolls really low scores can use their extra points to bolster them.

The CR system is already completely trashed in Dragonstar

Well, sure, and the same could be said of Midnight -- very different settings require very different CR assignments.

My point is just that many DMs wouldn't expect adding a few ability points to change the game much. My experience is that they really do.

(My PCs held off two CR13 critters and one CR16 critter, and they were half 12/half 13 level at 32 point buy. No PC deaths. High ability scores rock.)

I'm comparing characters with the Forgotten Realms. When my characters are the same level as Drizzt, I want them to have at least a good chance of being able to kick his stupid rear all over the place. You can't do that on 25 pt buy, or even 32. :)
I take a different approach to the same problem: I re-build the Realms NPCs from scratch. (Many of 'em aren't well-constructed anyway. Nor do they make much use of the multitude of prestige classes out there.)

I give the PCs 36 points. Uber-NPCs like Drizzt get 36 too. Other gets less.

my group did normal stat rolloing (4d6 drop low)
and rolled 5 stats, then everyone got an 18
starting at 11th lvl - I built a mostly powered up melee cleric, see sig. while the thief and archer were over the top.

The DM got fed up with uber characters and now that he is playing again,
wants to be a normal guy, struggling for survival.

Im looking at using just 4d6, but with 7! players there is going to be some discrepency
between stats.

I dont like the perfect sameness of pt buy but would like to make the playing field more equal -
any suggestions? something that resembles a point buy spread (ie no 18s or 6s

XX points + 1D6, 2D4, etc.

or

3D6, drop lowest, +6. Scores of 8-18, average of ... 14,15? 2D6 would produce more randomness with a chance for lower scores.

Playing a DS campaign at the moment. Lots of cloak and dagger.

We rolled 4d6, take the best 3, rerolling ones. Average stat is roughly 13 to 14, with 17's and 18's liberally distributed throughout the groups.
