Astral Deva character concerns

Kershek, cross check Savage Species with the Monster Manual(3 and 3.5) they never become large, their DEX is higher then 10 or 11, and their resistances are wrong. TRUST me on this I'm going to have an Astral Deva soon.

Savage Species is for playing a monstrous character. The Monster Manual is for NPCs and adversaries. The Monster Manual does not give advice on how to play an astral deva with a character advancement plan. Unless you can find it, I don't see where it says the MM that their stats are received from inherent bonuses or how much they get.

I understand there are differences between the 20th level astral deva PC and the monster manual version. However, like the other monsters listed, the differences between the two are there to allow for use as a player character and not just an NPC. I think this is an important distinction and shouldn't be ignored.

When you max out a Savage Species monster advancement you should be EXACTLY like a Monster Manual monster..same base saves, BAB, number of feats, special abilities, bonuses to abilities, etc. I know what Savage Species is, I will have an Astral Deva playing soon and there are glaring errors. If you don't believe me, that is fine..but why does it have electricity resistance AND immunity? I rest my case. Do what you will, but there are a few errors in the Astral Deva(Lack of DEX bonus, becoming large size, the resistance/immunity problems).

Also, the Monster Maual does tell you how to decompose a monster into it's base pluses to stats. I just don't remember where, it's in the back though.

If you look, you'll find that the Savage Species astral deva gets resistances at lower level and then it is enhanced to immunities at higher level. It's part of the stepped-up advancement process.

Also, I thought that Savage Species talked about how some things needed to be changed from a normal monster to make them playable as an ongoing character.

But this is really getting away from the the reason I created the thread :)

WE have an Astral Deva in our party, we are currently 8th. He hardly outshines the rest of the group. where he excells however is his defensive qualites. DR 5/+1, flight electricity immunity, and his aura. He is hard to hit but he can take as much damage as everyone else, the real powerhouse in the group is the centaur ranger or fighter I am not sure, he can rip off some damage. But I don't think that it is over powered. The flight is the only thing that I would worry about it. Put him up against a cleric or a paladin of the same level, and there would hardly be a contest.

Just my two schillings.

Arr, some of yer monster classes be frontloaded so much they be taken on water.

Me crew we done played a lower level game 1st to 6th or so with a darned Ghaele (sp? - CG celestials) less'n a fortnight back. We be salty sea gods so it weren't a big deal fer us, but the bastard was stronger'n captian Piratecat's best whiskey and twice as mean, fer being the level it was anyway. I'm think'n them Astral Devases is similar-like.

Starting at 5th level you'll definitely be ahead of the pack, but that won't continue, by the time you get to double digit levels you'll be pretty handicapped. Any evil cleric with unholy word can make you (with your below average-party-level hit dice) an unhappy camper.

One word of warning: Even with the power it takes a certain kind of player to play a ridged character class like that. The player was definitely a bit of a munchkin but even he got sick of having no say in the character's development. You really have to be into stuff like personality to make it work.

SS is one of the more balanced and well used books IMHO. I would gather that the ECL's are on par, the breakdown's make sense, and would not deviate too much from them.

I hardly doubt that a 20th level PC will be more overpowered or vice versa to the deva. Just run with it and you'll do fine.
