At the Grand Portal of the Dead

To Van & Velm -- I realize the arts of arcana are a bit beyond you both. But to simplify things, realize my books are my bowstrings ... my spells are my waraxe. I ask to scribe them not for selfish reasons, but because this is what I do for our group. I will agree to forgo the study of this spell now, but continue to ignore my need for study (or "vote" to go off while I do so) and you'll soon find yourself without my spells when you need them most.

But, you're both right, time is of the essence. Which is why we're not going to go find this Lunar Speculum of yours. I know the spell Leatherboots cast... he tracks should not be far from here. We follow him next.

To Van -- A bugbear in armor with a peace-bonded sword is still a bugbear. I don't care what you do in your spare time (in fact, I've heard of a brothel in Waterdeep that specializes in your tastes) ... but if you hesitate in battle, you could cost one of us our lives. May Selune give you strength to not do that.

Velm: "You're completely ignoring your own translations, Graniteskull. We just need to move on to our next task.

"Clangeddin forbid we should be without your spellwork; it was so effective against the 'Great Ulfe,' after all..."

Translations

You found three scraps of parchment in Hatho’s skûl: two pieces depict what Daziel speculated might be musical notation–One piece says “FIRE” in Dethek, and the other says “ICE.”

The third is a map with some Dethek writing and symbols on it...including a crown wreathed in flames–it says “FANE OF THE SOUL FORGER” across the top. On the right side, beneath the symbol of Clan Darkfell, is written in a shaky hand:

Tho goblins rose in fury against them
Hatho’s outraged pride has doomed them–
Doomed the Darkfell dwarves
To be forgotten.

Tho Ruathgrym is held and bound
The snakes he brought have sought and found
The prison-place where Glamerdrung
Bound the serpent.

Tho Selûne’s walls have toppled
–still the Worthy may seek the Moonweb
Tho Cindarm’s Hall is looted
–let this map lead ye to Crown of Fire

Tho trails may lead to this and that
Seek ye last the ziggurat
And stop the snakes who try to
Free the serpent.

My blood has ebbed
My life does fade
As all my deeds are mere charade
Let these be Hatho’s last words said:

End my curse whose purpose is old
Fill your heart's purse up with gold.

Maybe you should hesitate more, Bronn--even though Daziel hasn't mentioned it, the fact that you cast your web even though we had agreed to attempt a parley with the Scarlet Flame hasn't been lost in my memory. That worked out well for you, didn't it? Another spellbook to add to your collection? Maybe Daziel should cast her evil-sensing spell on you?

Anyway, the fact that I didn't immediately let fly a couple of arrows in the Lich's home may be the reason we are still standing. I can still recall how quickly Temuel, so recently released from his prison, was cut down because we rashly ran into battle. It's not taken me long to realize that we do much better if we are prepared for battle, rather than immediately taking up the fight when it presents itself. I realize that your spells are essential, but taking the time to learn a new one right now is dangerous and foolhardy. And I'm sure that you are not without weapons even if you don't learn this new spell. Just as I can resort to the blade if I break a string or Velm can take up the sword or cudgel if his axe fails, I see that you have abilities beyond this single, albeit powerful, spell.

We argue over the most petty things, and I agree that voting is out of the question. I would rather convince you with words rather than impose some democratic majority on you. Do you really feel that our time is best spent sitting around for the next four days while you learn a single new spell? Especially if, as you say, the Zhentarim is not far away.

Van -- If you were listening rather than staring lewdly at that bugbear corpse, you'd realize that I agreed to move now and forgo my research. I very much apologize for my hastiness in casting Web on our enemies, I must have been distracted thinking about your groveling before the undead lich.

But enough is enough. Back to the issue at hand. This translation puzzles me.

Obviously, Ruathgrym (the Corpsecoil) brought the snake-worshipers we met to Aerunedar, and they eventually found a "serpent" that Glamerdrung (the Silver Dragon the Flamecoil slew) had imprisoned. This may be the Naga we saw ... or perhaps something worse.

This passage is interesting:

Tho trails may lead to this and that
Seek ye last the ziggurat
And stop the snakes who try to
Free the serpent.

I think this may lie within the former dragon's cave (along the water). I think that's where we may want to go next. This is only a hunch though. I read this as saying that no "trail" will lead to the "ziggurat" (a pyramid-type structure), and no trail leads to that cavern off the river.

And don't forget about that we now supposedly "hold the key to rubies three, saphires three, and crown of fire."

Rubies three, saphires three... this means something. Hmmm. Let me think about this a bit.

Velm: "Interesting. But if Ruathgrym brought the snake-worshipers here, how is it he ended up 'held and bound' in the halls of Rivior--where we faced his mummified body? We know from Temuel's story that he faced Ruathgrym there, just after the Bandit King and all his men went to meet their death, the night Ruathgrym slew Redhand. We also know that Aerunedar was under siege at about that time...

"But the Corpsecoil trapped Temuel in a gem...and we know nothing more of how he himself ended up 'held and bound.'"

Daziel: finishes praying, inspects the stone ring she wears...

"Perhaps this Ring of Lore taken from the Corpsecoil might tell us more? In another four days I can use it again.

"It is time I told you all why I came to Eveningstar from the shrine of Selune at Immersea. It was not only to root out the servants of the Black Tyrant, Bane.

"I came seeking the Moonweb. Earlier this year, on the night of Bane's ascendance, the high priest dreamt of four silver rings--powerful individually, but together forming an artifact of great power: the Moonweb.

"The rings that make up the Moonweb--Amglaer, Enthandas, Shelmroun and Tilithar--first appear in Realmslore individually, given to devout Selunites by the Shards (servitors of the Goddess) in the dark years after the fall of Netheril. They served as minor magical aids and as focal points for prayers to the Goddess.

"Eventually, around 616 DR (though accounts are vague), two of the rings were unwittingly brought together when Selunite clergy met to plan the future of the faith at Manystreams. Selune appeared in the dreams of all the assembled clerics, telling them of the four rings and bidding them seek the two missing ones. She imparted the names of the rings, but no other clues that may have aided the faithful in finding them.

"It is said in the secret lore of our faith that one or two of the rings were hidden here by the Moonmistresses of Aerunedar, after they aided the silver wyrm Glamerdrung in the binding of a great evil. But years later, as we know, hordes of goblins swept through this place, and the rings faded from knowledge once more.

"An evil power of terrible proportions is said to be rising in the northern deserts--whole villages, even the city of Tilverton, have been swept from the face of Toril--and the high priest at Immersea dreamt that the Moonweb would soon be found...by Banites.

"I am here to see that they do not take the Moonweb. Not even a piece of it. Singly, the rings hold bits of the Moon's power, but together it is said they can reveal great knowledge. Whoever wears all four rings truly walks with Selune.

"It is unlikely that four, or even two, of the rings are here. But if even one fell into the hands of the Banite scum...it would be an evil day for the people of my faith.

"This must not come to pass. We must seek out the Lunar Speculum, as we were bidden by the ghostly priestess beneath Stone Tooth. I will go alone if I must. I am also committed to lifting the Curse of Hathos--I will do what needs to be done to achieve that goal--but I must also answer the call of my Goddess. Since Hathos mentions the Moonweb in the rhyme you translated, Bronn, it may very well have significance for the lifting of his Curse."

[Van: Daziel can tell you more details about the "great knowledge" imparted by the Moonweb, privately, but she asks you to keep it to yourself.]

The dwarves want to return their brethern to the halls, we wish to regain the Moonweb--it looks like these things coincide nicely. Recall the poem that was on the map found in the drum:

Tho Selûne’s walls have toppled
–still the Worthy may seek the Moonweb
Tho Cindarm’s Hall is looted
–let this map lead ye to Crown of Fire

Tho trails may lead to this and that
Seek ye last the ziggurat
And stop the snakes who try to
Free the serpent.

To me, it looks like there are three things we need to do--seek the Moonweb and the Crown of Fire (perhaps they coincide with the other two pieces of paper in the drum labled ICE and FIRE?), then, after this has been done, seek the ziggurat. Perhaps the Moonweb and the Crown are required to topple the ziggurat?

I am confused, however--how does the Lunar Speculum connect to the Moonweb? One is a mirror, the other is four rings? Are they connected at all? I feel they must be in some way.

Daziel: "The Lunar Speculum is what they called the temple of Selune in Aerunedar...I am not sure why, nor do I know what the connection is between it and the Moonweb. But I agree that some connection must exist."

Corwyn: dozes off...

Further Translations:

There is tiny lettering on the "FANE OF THE SOUL FORGER" map...it has arrows that seem to point to various rooms and locations in the depicted tunnel complex. There are symbols indicating a Storage Cache, a room marked "Clangeddin's Hall," and Danger...

Near the Danger mark are several captions: "3 rubies," "3 sapphires," "4 stones," & "trial of smoke." These seem to lead up to "Moradin's Hall" and then to "Crown of Fire."

Velm -- Interesting point about Ruathgrym. I guess we don't know the timeline for all the events. Did he face Temuel BEFORE or AFTER he brought the snakes into Aerunedar? I tend to lean towards before... and after he slew Redhand, he brought the wurgym snakes to destroy Aerunedar.

Daziel -- Why hadn't you told us about this Moonweb sooner? And you accuse me of having secrets? In any event, I'm not sure how this Moonweb relates to the Crown of Fire ... remember that the Crown of Fire isn't literal.. I'm pretty sure it's what the dwarves here called the mithril forges.

"FANE OF THE SOUL FORGER" refers to the Temple of Moradin. This temple must be just before we enter the area of the forges.

As to "3 rubies, 3 sapphires, 4 stones, & trial of smoke" ... these may refer to things we'll find there... or perhaps things we'll need to have before we enter.

It's funny how the original riddle referred to the drum as being the "key" to Rubies 3 and Sapphires 3. But nothing about 4 stones and trial of smoke.

Daziel: "Why didn't I tell you about an artifact sacred to Selune? Why didn't I tell you the secrets of my faith? Besides the fact that I was told not to, I simply don't trust you Bronn.

"You threaten the rest of us with great regularity. You withhold information from us--need I remind everyone of the Sage's Journal?--and you spend far too much time with liches--and then make a show of wanting to destroy them--for my taste. You've stated three times in the past hour that you have no intention of seeking out the Lunar Speculum. What need, pray tell, do you have for this information, besides a convenient source of yet more magic to quench your greed?

"Honestly, Bronn, I think you're a disagreeable little troll who thrives on being nasty to everyone around you. But I've got news for you: you're not an outcast child any longer. You are a wizard...and a talented wizard, at that. I'll never deny that your connection with Mystra is strong.

"If you wish to receive the respect you desire, act like a wizard. If you wish to act like an angry little boy, I'll treat you like one."

Velm: "...ah...well...okay, then.

"Perhaps the Drum isn't the only key we need. Besides, the original riddle said the drum "holds the key," not "is the key." I think it's clear Hathos wanted someone to figure out his clues, but he didn't necessarily want to set out a laundry list for the Coil or the Sons of the Coil.

"And I think what happened was: Temuel arrived at Redhand's Tower, then Ruathgrym destroyed the tower and slew Redhand, then Temuel traveled to Rivior's Hold and was trapped in a gem by the wizard. What sort of magic is that, anyway? More to the point: why didn't Ruathgrym use it on us when we came to destroy him?"

[Temuel's Story is posted in the campaign journal, linked below!]

Daziel -- Whatever, sweetheart. Just keep up the good work deafening and stunning the party, holding secrets from us, and speaking ill of me with Red Wizards.

I propose we split up this party. We have two objectives and a large group of people. Daziel, Van, and the sleeping Corwyn should seek out this Moonweb. Velm, Sieta, and I will search for the Crown of Fire. If you survive the ordeal, we can meet up at the Ziggurat later for our final battle.

Velm -- I don't know what kind of magic was used on Temuel. No spell exists that I know of that can trap a PERSON in a gem (I do know of one that would trap their soul... I can show you one that later ... joking of course). But with Mystra's Weave, anything is possible. I believe the Corpsecoil used something called Gem Magic. It was a passing interest of mine for a time. Arcane or Divine symbols are carved into gems to create items of power.

So, let's arrange a time and a place to meet in a few days.
