attacking into a grapple

If it's a ranged attack you 'randomly determine' which opponent is struck. (No percentages are given; it's reasonable to assume that two creatures of the same size would have equal chances of being hit, but once size categories vary, the DM has to make a judgement.)

If it's a melee attack, there's no chance of the attack going awry. Sneak attack away.

Can you tell me where I could find this rule? I quoted it last night at the table and had to back down. I checked the grapple section and the ranged attack section of the SRD. I see nothing of this rule. Where did I read it?

Thanks!

No idea where it is in the SRD. For the PHB, check pg. 151, table 8-6: Armor Class Modifiers.

That's where it is in the SRD, too.

Thanks ya'll!

I *knew* I'd read it, but ya know how it goes when you're gaming and the clock is running. I should've stuck by my original ruling. Could've had the thief kill the mage....fun!

Basically, the DM sorta screwed the rogue by blowing the actual rule, but that's livable, IMO.

Actually it wast the ranger who I felt sorry for!

"Arrgh, I'm being chewed/clawed/raked by a dire lion! Help me buddy!"

"Ow, that was my kidneys!"

"Ow, that was my kidneys again!"

The Conan OGL game has a brilliant grappling rule, which basically says that if you are strong and have "improved grapple" you can attempt to use the thing you're grappling as a "human shield" - gives you a few points more AC and may result in your human shield taking the damage instead :)

Cheers
