Attacks from Hiding

What is the result when an attack from hiding occurs (melee)?
Does the attacker then lose all hide benefits? Does the person attacked have to make a spot to find the attacker? Does the hider get modifiers to his established hide?

First we should compare to a sniping attack:
Sniping: If you've already successfully hidden at least 10 feet from your target, you can make one ranged attack, then immediately hide again. You take a –20 penalty on your Hide check to conceal yourself after the shot.

To attack from melee means revealing yourself, and then you can't hide again because you are being observed.

Of course, you could use Bluff to create a distraction to hide again at -10, but not until the next round.

All this is assuming you have no special abilities.

Check: Your Hide check is opposed by the Spot check of anyone who might see you. You can move up to one-half your normal speed and hide at no penalty. When moving at a speed greater than one-half but less than your normal speed, you take a –5 penalty. It’s practically impossible (–20 penalty) to hide while attacking, running or charging.

Apparently you can hide while attacking. You'd need cover or concealment tho, and you're at -20 hide. Of course your opponent will know which square you're in if you're attacking from melee, so all you're really doing is trading 20% miss chance up to 50% miss chance (Unless you have hide in plain sight, such as in the case of the Shadowdancer).

This may seem pretty powerful, but basically its just improved invisibility, but alot easier to foil with spot. So while its perhaps unintended I don't know if I'd disallow it.. I'd have to playtest it to make an informed decision.

Attacking means you stopped hiding
Unless you attempt to attack while hidden in which case you take a -20 to your hide check

You still require something to hide behind unless you are a shadow dancer

Majere
can hide at +18 AFTER sneak attacking your ass
