[August] What Are You Reading?

After proofreading a friend's final version of her new novel, I've finally got hold of 'Mordenkainen's Magnificient Mansion' which I like a lot so far.

I finished "Clear and Present Danger" last week. It was awful. Only thing that kept me going was a determination not to be beaten by it.

I'm now reading "Conqueror" by Conn Iggulden, which I'm enjoying a great deal more. I recommend it, but with one caveat - it's very definitely historical FICTION.

I'm not sure what's next. Possibly "Choices of One" by Timothy Zahn, or perhaps "Pride and Prejudice" or "Sense and Sensibility" by Austen.

There are no RPG books on my to-read pile. The next one will be the next Pathfinder, but they haven't sent that yet!

I finished The Demon Princes by Jack Vance on the last day of July, and although the whole series was fun, I felt the demon princes themselves got less interesting as the series progressed.

I finished Lords of the North by Bernard Cornwell, which I felt was weaker than the two previous books. It is about Uthred, a throneless warrior king of England under the time of Alfred the Great and the struggle between pagans vs Christians, Saxons vs Danes.

I am now reading A. Bertram Chandler's The Broken Cycle which is part of his John Grimes: Survey Captain series. All the John Grimes books make me want to play early Traveller. The reader can see how Chandler influenced that prestigious RPG.

I just finished Age of Miracles, which would have been great when I was twelve, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I found extremely interesting considering that I thought the protagonist had Asperger's Syndrome. I've been disabused of that notion online, but I have a daughter on the spectrum and I swear the kid had AS.

I've just started Every Dead Thing, which feels very pulpy, which I love, and The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao, which I've heard good things about.

I read the first hardback of Superman Action Comics. Some very cool stuff, and I like Superman's power level. I think that Superman: Secret Origin was a better telling of that particular tale, though. I need to re-read that and see if my memory of it is right.

I've started Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice. I like the slower pace, good book.

Working my way through Adventurer Conqueror King System, which looks to be the game I'm going to be running my new sandbox campaign with.
