Avasculate...

First off does this spell effect constructs? undead? I would be under the assumption of no because its a necromacy spell and it says you shoot a black ray of necromantic energy(negative energy?)...

Second, is this a little overpowered in the fact it offers no save other than to avoid being stuned for a round?

1. The spell says that if a target doesn't have a vascular system, it isn't affected. So no.

2. Holy word offers no save. I'm sure I could come up with other examples given time. I have never seen a powergamer use avasculate, so I'm guessing it's not overpowered. Feel free to quote the text if you want people to take a closer look; I don't remember the rules for it.

Undead are not immune to necromancy effects (though constructs are). But since undead have no Con score, they are immune to any effect that allows a Fort save (unless it is harmless or affects objects). So both undead and constructs are immune.

I think it is a little overpowered, since I think spells which do more damage based on the target being more powerful are a problem. Avasculate will do 2 pts of damage when used on a 1st lvl commoner with 4 hp and will do 358 pts of damage to a great wyrm gold dragon. That doesn't sit well with me.

I don't think it's overpowered. It s a level 7 spell. It shares its level with Simulacrum, Forcecage, Amber Sarcophagus, and Superior Invisibility among others of equal or greater power. Compared to these, Avasculate is pretty tame. Why cast a spell that lowers a mobs hp to half when you have core, common spells that take a target out no save in one shot?

Higher level spells often confuse well meaning people used to staggeringly powerful spells like magic missle, invisibility, and cone of cold. To them, the only high level spells are Clone and Meteor Swarm. Trap the Soul, the most powerful offensive ability available to any god or man, can take out Saint Cuthbert with no save and no SR...of course, he's powerful enough to just step back out and convert your body into particle energy if he wishes. Hehe.
