Avatars of War miniatures

Avatars of War makes miniatures for hobbyist painters. Their pricing is par for the course for a miniature of that detail level by a sculptor of that skill level.

I can understand not wanting to pay that if you are not a hobbyist painter. But their pricing is in line with the pricing of other european gaming companies that market high detail and sculpt quality miniatures, such as Infinity and Anima Tactics.

That is what I thought when I looked at the green figure online, but not when I got it in the mail. Certainly the skill of the sculptor is top-notch and as good as any 28mm miniatures that I've seen, but evidently the quality of the moulding drops it down a bit. Not to mention that some of the sculptors employed by Reaper are of a similar caliber (Tre Manor, Werner Klocke, and Bobby Jackson come to mind--there may be others), especially when coupled with Reaper's superior moulding process.

So with Avatars you are getting premier sculptors but sub-par moulding, bringing the overall quality of the figure (at least the one I have) down to a similar level as Reaper. In other words, when you compare the best of Reaper with Avatars, you are getting similar quality, but Avatars cost 2-4 times as much.

Ah. I haven't bought any in person, so I don't know the molding level. The sculpts of the greens are above normal level in terms of detail, though, and while Tre Manor and Bobby Jackson each have occasional hits, I'd put the overall Avatar line against the overall line of those two any day of the week.

Klocke's stuff is just as good, though, and far cheaper if you buy the stuff he does for Reaper. The stuff from his private line is equally expensive, or even more expensive than Avatars.

Yea, Freebooter is awesome but cheap it ain't. It's annoying because I have a hobby store that carries it, but it's more expensive to get it there then to order it from Freebooter directly. Damn import fees and the variable strength of the dollar.
