There is no suggestion that they hadn’t encountered a Doom previous though - the F4 movie indicates that they had a long history of adventures.

Yes, quite a few FF villains got name checked (Diablo, Puppet Master, Wizard) though of course we only saw one (Mole Man).

I sort of suspect that Doom does something with time, and assembles the original Avengers...though why, is hard to imagine, unless to participate in Secret Wars, or maybe because Doomstark has some kind of weird affinity with Ironstark's old teammates. But I kind of suspect Doomsday will be the last true "Avengers" movie and more of a hand-off to the FF....just as the old X-Men will hand-off to the new X-Men, probably in Secret Wars. But I'm guessing they're keeping the word in the film titles because it has far more cache than the "Fantastic Four" does.

Meaning, I'd be surprised if we don't see Chris Evans suit up again. What will be really annoying is if they bring him back just to have Doom kill him. Sorry, your life with Peggy is cut short. But I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens: Doom wipes the deck of the old MCU, in some form or fashion. Or maybe Steve Rogers is just called with others to fight Doom, but gets sent back to his life with Peggy in the end.

I also dislike fourth wall humor, which is part of why I find Ryan Reynolds so annoying (he has been funny in some films - but I feel like everything since Waiting has been Monty out-takes). And the Marvel formula just got a bit worn after awhile; for me, the GotG films were the first time I was like, "Yeah, I'm sort of over the quippiness." That said, RDJ was always great until the bitter end and my favorite Marvel joke remains "That guy's playing Galaga!" It is just so perfectly delivered as a non sequitur in a way that only RDJ can. I've chuckled the three or four times I've re-watched the film.

As I've said before, and recently in a mega-thread I started on the Future of Old Franchises, in addition to the weaker meta-arc of the Multiverse Saga, I think the MCU's biggest problem is that they got rid of most of, if not all, the most charismatic characters. Tony Stark and Steve Rogers were an easy 1-2 in terms of charismatic screen presence. Black Panther was getting there, but the actor died (RIP), but he was arguably #3, especially if you take into account potential. Scarlett Johansson was also up there and probably the most charismatic female lead, and she also died.

They tried to continue with the second tier actors. Chris Hemsworth is really best as a secondary character, not the lead. The Thor movies at their best weren't really about him, but the story and world itself, and Thor as part of that.

This is not to say that the other characters weren't good, but that Downey Jr, Evans, Boseman, and Johansson were the two best characters and two of the next best characters. I think Deadpool & Wolverine furthered the point, that no matter what the scifi extravanganza is, the movies hang on the leads. The typical movie-going normies go to see a movie about Iron Man or Wolverine, not a dive into the multiverse. Anthony Mackie has been really good in a variety of roles, and was solid as Falcon, but he just doesn't have the "superhero charisma" that Chris Evans does.

We see Reed kicking an ape, which from the tv show host's voiceover we have to assume is one of the Red Ghosts's super apes.

Great to see McKellen and Stewart back for one last ride. I’d have preferred McAvoy and Fassbender (because we’d have them for longer) but maybe we will, some day. Amazing to see Marsden in the classic 90s outfit.

ETA: Don't get me wrong ... I love them, eager for more X-Men (MTG set and second season of X-Men '97 when?), but this movie is gonna be so overstuffed I doubt they'll get much more than that.

Yeah, I think this movie is mostly going to come down to five minutes of seeing each of these characters' current status quo getting up-ended by the Crisis on Infinite Earths, followed by seeing all but one or two of them die after the intro scenes are over, and then the survivors dying in the big group battle at the end, mysteriously only leaving the core MCU characters, much like Endgame shockingly only came down to the original Avengers.
